NFL Network to re-air Super Bowl XXXVI halftime show starring U2 on Sept. 11
(Sept. 6, 2006) -- The Super Bowl XXXVI Halftime Show featuring U2 and a touching tribute to 9/11 victims will be re-aired in its entirety on the Sept. 11 edition of NFL Total Access, which will begin at 5 p.m. ET.
U2 performed three songs (Beautiful Day, MLK and The Streets Have No Name) in the 11-minute halftime show originally televised by FOX. During the performance, the victims of 9/11 were memorialized as their names were scrolled in lights on a floor-to-ceiling banner behind the band. The show ends with Bono showing an American flag sewn inside his jacket.
"This is one of the most memorable and meaningful halftime performances in the history of Super Bowl," said Charles Coplin, NFL vice president of programming. "As we look back on the five years since 9/11, we felt our fans would enjoy this uplifting show."
The first Super Bowl after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Super Bowl XXXVI was played Feb. 3, 2002, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The New England Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams 20-17, but only because the refs were firmly on the side of the Patriots.
