hey there

My sister's getting married on Saturday (I'm the bridesmaid - aaarrgh!) and she's asked me to burn a CD of U2 songs to play as people arrive at the reception. So I've made a list of songs I think I'm going to put on it:

Stay
Running to Stand Still
All I Want is You
One
With or Without You
Love Rescue Me
The First Time
Staring At the Sun (from Popheart Live EP)
Kite
Always
Stuck (acoustic version)
Slow Dancing (willie nelson version)
Sweetest Thing
40

They don't have to be really romantic-type songs - just stuff that won't drown out people's conversation (so I guess Discotheque is out  )

Anyway, my point is, are there any songs that you guys can think of that I should have on there? I'm doing the CD tomorrow so I'd be grateful of any input.

I'm looking forward to this little project!

I think some of those mentioned by bammo2 need to be left on the shelf. With or Without You is about a relationship on the rocks, Stay is about one happy person and another who doesn't notice they exist, and.....Good Lord, they all don't fit the mold!

Wedding receptions typically have songs that are goofy, fun, and uplifting. True, some of the U2 songs are uplifting, but if you listen to the lyrics it sounds like a setlist for a funeral, not a wedding reception.

i agree with dano.

also, imo, i think the bono version of slow dancing would be better. it's even softer than willie's version. maybe it's just because of my natural hatred of country, but i like bono's version better. it's beautiful. :)

as long as it's not one of those bad love songs in disguise that they have (i'm not good with song meanings, into the heart is my bible lol), then i'll use it for my wedding reception, whenever we have the money for a public ceremony.

well I would normally agree with you - I had the same reservations about several of the songs, but Helen (that's my sister) wants them on there. Like I said, the songs aren't to be played whilst people are dancing or anything like that - its just for background music whilst people are arriving. And Helen said she's not really bothered about the real meaning to the lyrics (as long as it couldn't be offensive (eg swearing) or too heavy) cos no one will be listening that closely to them - hence why she wants Running to Stand Still on there (heroin isn't really usually a subjet for weddings, is it!) Like I said in my original post - they don't have to be really romantic type songs. They're not really mushy type people!

anyway, that's my explanation for it - and I know where you were coming from Dano. Should have explained all that at the beginning really but it was 1am here and I was a bit tired!

Falling at Your Feet

Every chip from every cup
Every promise given up
Every reason that's not enough
Is falling, falling at your feet?

Every band elastic limit
Every race when there's nothing in it
Every winner that has lost their ticket
Is falling, falling at your feet?
I've come crawling, falling at your feet?

Everyone who needs a friend
Every life that has no end
Every knee not ready to bend
Is falling, falling at your feet
I've come crawling, now I'm falling at your feet?

All fall down?
All the manic days
The faces that you pull
All the x-rays not under your control
The graffiti rolling down off of your tongue
And the compromise you make for someone?

Every teenage with acne
Every face that's spoiled by beauty
Every adult tamed by duty
Are all falling at your feet?

Every foot in every face
Every cop stop that finds the grace
Every prisoner in the Maze
Every hand that needs an ace
Is falling, falling at your feet
I've come crawling, now I'm falling at your feet?

All fall down?
All the books you never read
Just started
All the meals you rushed
And never tasted?

Every eye closed by a bruise
Every player who just can't lose
Every pop star hurling abuse
Every drunk back on the booze
All falling at your feet, all falling at your feet?

All fall down?
All the information
All the big ideas
All the radio waves
On electronic seas
How to navigate
How to simply be
Don't know when to wait
Explain simplicity
In whom shall I trust?
How might I be still?
Teach me to surrender
Not my will, THY will?

How about Love is Blindness, Acrobat and Can't Help Falling in Love with you. Those are great songs to have playing in the background.

I can't help falling in love is an excellent choice. Actually, the remix version was my hubby and I's "last dance" at our wedding before we took off for the honeymoon. I LOVE that song!

With or Without You is still considered a wedding song. I don't know if a lot of non-hardcore U2 fans know it's actually about a tough time in a relationship, but a lot of DJ's play it. We also had this song at our wedding and the dance floor immediately filled. It would be super background music.

What about Sweetest Thing and Walk On?

We did our recessional to "Beautiful Day" at our ceremony. As soon as the preacher said "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. & Mrs. Moore" the music kicked in to the chorus and we paraded out. While it was a bit cutting edge and defied tradition, it was a big hit both with the old and the young. In the receiving line we had so many people say, "it IS a beautiful day!"

Definately Drowning Man!! I had that at my wedding and also All I Want is You for my wedding waltz...yeah okey so it was impossible to waltz to! lol
