Vh-1 and Rollingstone.com both confirm that although they fell 2,000 copies from last week they still sold 26,000 copies to rise up to #39 on the billboard charts. The artical mentions that the grammies arnt helpong but I feel that they are very much so!!! They dont seem to be increasing sales but leveling them. U2 and Indea-arie both rise greatly. U2 isnt falling as fast as everyone else! I hope that they can stay in the top 40 but who knows. Not bad for an album that has been out for 63 weeks!

Excellent points Vox626! You are right. For people like us, namely those who routinely watch the charts, clearly this is a HUGE success. For an album to jump back INTO the TOP 40 on the U.S. charts 63 weeks after its release - and with no new single or tour to promote it - is amazing.

What RollingStone.com and other sites fail to realize is that while sales declined a bit for U2, sales declined ENORMOUSLY for everyone else. This is a very slow time of year. The holiday season is over, so all sales (clothing, music, movies, etc.) drop. For U2 to remain virtually stagnant in sales when they have no new single or tour going, is impressive. For U2 to return to the U.S. Top 40 under these circumstances is incredible! This is indeed glorious news!

Based on that information, here is a summary for the U.S. Charts.

The first 63 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20(1xP)-18-22-16
19-19(2xP)-25-33-37-35-11-15-25-31
38-40-42-45-45-48-50-48-50-58
60-53-50-66-74-82-81-89-88-99
105-106-108-104-78-66-53-50-57-55
54-58(3xP)-62-67-80-77-78-76-69-71
74-58-39

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it has now returned for an additional 19 weeks. It has spent 59 out of 63 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100, and, now, 23 weeks in the U.S. Top 40!

Approximate weekly sales for the first 63 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 32,000 + 50,000 + 80,000 + 40,000 + 28,000 + 26,000

Estimated total U.S. sales after 63 weeks are: 3,355,000

This is great! It might be just possible that ATYCLB stays on in the Top 200 longer than JT....which stayed there for 103 weeks.
Depending on how many awards U2 receive, U2 should be in the Top 40 for atleast another 3 weeks. If they receive 3 awards, they'll stay in for an extra 5 weeks.
4 awards would get them into the Top 10 for possibly a week, giving them about 7 weeks in the Top 40.
5 would get them about 2, possibly 3 weeks in the Top 10, and about 8-9 weeks in the Top 40.
6 might get them the No. 1 position, and they'd stay in the Top 40 for about 10 weeks.
7 awards would probably get them the No. 1 position and keep them in the Top 40 for 11-12 weeks and a totally of about 16 including this week and the next couple of weeks.

Ofcourse this is just baseless speculation. I mean who can truly predict Americans apart from themselves? And even then it's tough....
Kidding.
Bless you all.

The Grammys arent for another 6 weeks so we've got a good amount of time to go...The Superbowl may help a bit, but since it seems like every artist in the world is getting a shot at performing in the pregame show and the opening events, who knows how much of an impact it will have...

thanks for everyones posts. Thanks to doctorwho for giving us the full tally of the 63 weeks with sales numbers.

Rollingstone and VH1 are stupid if they can't see that an album that rises 19 spots on the chart got some boost from grammy nominations. Creed dropped 17% and they have a hit single, hit video, and a brand new tour! The number 2 album didn't even break the 100,000 mark. It was a SLOW sad week. So for U2 to sell 26,000 copies to be in the top 40! in it's 63rd week is truly incredible.

What is even sweeter is the fact that both the BSB and nsync drop and they sit at number 52 and 56 respectively.

ha ha!!

And nsync even won an AMA last week. Talk about an awards show not boosting sales.

With the run that U2 has had with this album, I think that it's small time outside the top 100 is really insignificant. I see the album being in the top 100 until at least the end of March. Then it would probably be best if it went away, so that people have some time off of U2 before the new album arrives.

Question how is Michael Jackson's "History" album able to re-enter the Billboard Top 200?
I thought after 2 years of release it can only chart on the Pop Catalog Chart?

Oh yeah, U2 also moves up one spot on the catalog sales chart and Stuck moves up 3 spots to #10 on adult top 40 with no increase in spins.

I will never understand the billboard sales system, and I am bitter at it every time I see U2's Best of listed. It shows it as only platinum when in reality, with both versions of the album combined it is 3x's platinum! I mean it looks pathetic up there next to the other catalog album with anywhere from 5 to 26 million to their name.

McFly, what does billboard list for the number of weeks that the album has been on the chart? I am not really familiar with the release date of that one, but it may be just under the limit. (You are correct about the 2 year rule)

I believe MJ's History album came out in June/July 1995, so thats 6 1/2 years ago(Remember the tv ad with the big MJ statue, being carried in a parade). So this is way pass the 2 year mark!! I don't know how many weeks the album has charted. This chart info was listed on billboard's news section listing this weeks chart highlights.

Could the re-entry be because it had such an increase in sales??

I don't know about the US, but here in Germany MJ's "History" has been re-released as a single disc (only the "Greatest Hits"). So maybe Billboard is counting the single disc as a different album.

Aaaah! Your right! I just checked cdnow.com to see MJ's cd releases and they released his Greatest Hits on a single cd. It was released on Nov 13th. I didn't hear any promotion on this.
I'm suprised how low it is #115? (Promotion could be why)
