I'm in high school, and I was messing with my friends saying that U2 is more emo than some other bands, and to my surprise, I made a playlist of U2 songs that I think could be considered Emo

not the whiny emo, but the good kind, like Bright Eyes and stuff

Mofo
The Fly
Acrobat
One
If God Will Send His Angels (Single)
Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
The First Time
With or Without You
The Unforgettable Fire
Running to Stand Still
Bad
Exit
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Night and Day
Love is Blindness
All I Want is You

so what do you think? and do you think U2 could be considered Emo as well?

I don't see it, but then I guess everyone has different ideas of what emo is. It's odd though - most of my favourite U2 songs are in that list you made, even though I generally refuse to go near anything even marginally emo
I just can't get on with that genre of music.

I don't really like emo or hardcore or screamo music at all though

but Emo to me is just like that kind of anguish and depressing tone, or about love in a dark way.

Some people probably see it different than me

so im assuming "emo" means.. "emotional" music?
um, doesnt that consist of pretty much... most songs?

i'm sick of hearing this whole "emo" classification for music. its stupid and just downright annoying. not you, lemonmacphisto.. but these other people that go overboard complaining calling this and that emo... emo this.. emo that. what the hell?

besides.. all of those u2 songs mentioned.. are very different from eachother and also dealing with different themes.. different sounds.. different everything...

seriously.. maybe i'm missing something with the whole "emo" thing. but now im interested.

what's everyone's definition of "emo"? LOL

;hmm:

Most of those song titles would also do quite nicely as porno flick titles....

(don't mind me I'm seeing porno titles in many song titles over the past few days... :reject: )

wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo

"In all of its forms, emo music generally shares some of the same concepts: personal, meaningful lyrics, usually of an introspective nature, and a deep connection with a band's audience."

based on what people consider to be "emo": good charlotte, keane (whom I love dearly), green day, etc.. i dont know how those u2 songs fit in anything like that... and e ach of those bands have totally different music and themes as well.

emo is a made-up term for... something thats so generalized and taken out of context.

My opinion of emo is somewhat different. I think back in the days when it was dominated purely by artists like Bright Eyes (and the other Wichita artists of the time) and less so by the commercial, eyeliner wearing folk that dominate it now, I would have agreed. But not now.

LOL! yeah.. like.. most songs. LOL
old, new, future.. heh.

anything thats good!

so, in that sense.. yeah.. U2 is "emo".

i guess "emo" is anything that isnt like "My girlfriend likes to make out with me in the backseat" kinda music...

would one consider Eminem "emo"?

U2 emo?

:lmao:

I suppose pretty soon they'll start drawing those X's on their hands and wearing their belts sideways or whatever else those "emo" kids do these days.

Personally I don't think any of their music can be considered emo at all. I find emo music to all sound exactly the same. Whiny teenaged boys who haven't quite hit puberty. Only singing half the time, the rest of the time screaming as if they're a bit constipated.

There are two versions of emo but most people only know of one version. The most popular form of emo known today is the version that people associate with fashion and really bad whiney music. Then there is the original form of emo that grew and evolved in the early 90's an as offshoot of hardcore music. That version was associated with bands like Fugazi and Rites of Spring. Then, it was never about break up songs or horrible fashion, it was associated with meaningful lyrics and passionate performances.. Which U2 could have been when they made their first 2 albums.

But now, emo is mostly known for what has been overtly commercialized. Honorable mention goes to some late 90's bands like Promise Ring and the Get Up Kids.

let's make things clear... there's no good EMO

close this thing :lock:

That's not fair :(

That's like someone who likes rap saying there are no good opera singers, just because they don't like the music. Every bad is good in their own way. But if u were just kidding, then my bad. lol.

Anyway. I wouldn't classify U2 as emo at all. Too many upbeat songs to be emo. I really only like one "emo" band and thats Jimmy Eat World. I love them. :reject:

I don't know much about emo music. So I won't go into much detail. But... based on what I've heard from other people, associating U2 with emo makes me want to :barf:

U2 shouldn't even BE classified into another thing. They are in a category all of their own and rightfully so... and all of their music is so different and varies.. musically and theme-wise.
And should not be compared.

So, if by defintion "emo" is what was just explained a few threads up.. then hell no.. U2 isn't that at all.
However, I think I now get the whole "emo" thing now. See, ya learn something new everyday! hah.

I hate classifications like that though. Its ridiculous and poorly labeled in most cases... as already said.

Yes... check out their retrospective 3 CD set, 'Stories From The Boys'. It came out in the latter part of 2012 I think.

You'll get a good perspective of their work. ;)
