U2 becoming a cult band again!

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
So I'm standing in line for hours to miss out on getting tickets, and then having to pay some jacker on ebay $500 for a $49 GA ticket to see a cult band? That's a pretty big friggin' cult. I hate to say it, but I think that the word is out.

People(not u2 fans) heard u2 songs but don't know who made them. U2 is always there, just beneath the skin of today's music, not on top of charts but recognizable and pretty much liked. In my personal poll 1 out of 10 people said that she dislikes u2. I said that she doesn't know what she's talking about.
This is my friends' list of songs that "aren't u2" and they like them:
1.The sweetest thing
2.One
3.ISHFWILF
4.Walk on
5.MOFO(they tought it's Depeche mode or Prodigy)
6.Pride
7.Sunday Bloddy Sunday

If you put them together you get an album which rocks.

they were a cult band somewhere around 1995-1997 period

I would agree with this. Those years were some of my formative music years and I didn't even know who U2 was. I recognized songs like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day" from the 80s rock station but I still didn't know who sang them. Articles would refer to bands sounding like U2 and I would sit there and wonder who U2 was. Were they some sort of critic's band? The more I found out about them in later years the more embarrassing it was that I didn't know who they were. They were the biggest band in world, except during 95-97.

Though there is no way in hell that I believe U2 to be a cult band, I can understand how someone in their teens might be inclined to think that they are the only one they know who knows a lot about them. For people in the twenties and older we've seen/heard so much about them in the past--I mean, I'm only 23 and I feel like the Elevation tour was just yesterday--and it seems like our friends at least knows a half dozen U2 songs, fan or not. For high schoolers it's different. They were young kids the last tour and don't yet know a lot about rock history.

Oh, and by the way, I totally get what you are saying about 95-97. I was a teenager then and although I knew of U2 and some of the albums and songs but when I found out that they were considered the world's most popular band I was beyond surprised. I thought they were a critics' darling or a beyond cool, European, supermodel-dating, far-out version of REM  That probably had to do with the legacy of Zootv and the fact that between the end of that tour and Popmart you didn't see much of them in public.

:lmao:

No kidding.

U2 is a cult band like the Catholic Church is a cult religion. :)

I would say that 98% of people I know don't know any songs by U2 other than the ATYCLB releases (minus 'Walk On'), the HTDAAB releases, Sweetest Thing, and maybe, at a push, One.
Not only is it a case that they don't care for U2 - it's also that they don't know about them and the music.

I think we should remember that we might be classified as U2 obsessed, and generally music obsessed.

For many people, music in general doesn't take up a huge chunk of their lives, and is just something in the background to make a bit of noise.

(I frankly don't understand these people, but I would hazard a guess that they're the majority of the population - fools!)

they're great either way. well known, not well-known.
it's all about the magical music they create and play for all us fans. screw the billboards! screw the charts! let 'em rock on fooorreeevveerrr with mass success (on or off the billboards)

Rooster, STOP THAT! Your making some of us feel very old...Hold on.... Ok, sorry had to go get my Viagra and Tivo Matlock......

On the subject of the Musically Obsessed. I believe that forum sites are our support groups, our AA, if you will. I've posted this on another thread, but I believe people should be seated according to band knowledge. Let those that enjoy "background noise" enjoy the noise from the background.
