On second thought, it's probably the 3 album run of War-UF-JT.

Closely followed by AB-Zoo TV.
 
it just seems to me that that period mid - late 80s U2 didn't need to sit down, ponder, re-write
they didn't even give themselves the time to do this
they just made music
and just about all of it is glorious

everything they've done since, no matter how good, never felt as effortlessly to me
 
The early to mid nineties. Achtung Baby, Zooropa and Passengers are easily their most creative and most interesting to me.

I still don't understand what people mean when they say U2 are still "relevant". Are they popular? Yes. Are they making anything we haven't heard before a hundred times? No. Albums like Atomic Bomb are packed with rock cliche's. They were pioneering their sound for almost 20 years until the 2000s came along and then they just rested on their laurels and threw creativity out the window. I could forgive them for ATYCLB because it was like a return to classic form, but Bomb was way too safe and familiar for me to find very interesting.
