From The Musician's Planet magazine from Mars Music...

"Still recovering from the stinging criticismsleveled at POP and the deliberately over-the-top "PopMart" tour, U2 grappled with their next move, abandoning the first nine months of recording and then suffering the loss of some lysrics when frontman Bono's laptop computer was stolen."

So I wonder at some point in the last few months (2 - 8) that they abandoned the new recordings and started anew.

Just a thought...oh, also in the article...

"Q: Prior to the new album's release, there was a lot of scuttlebutt about what it was going to sound like, including reports that it was going to be a raging rock record."

I wonder, after the early reports of Achtung, Baby, Pop and ATYCLB, that we'll finally get this 'raging rock record'

Hmmm, it sounds like, from the news on U2Star, that U2 are in the final stages of recording, and mixing. What happened is as good a guess as anyone's. But I don't think they scrapped everything, I think the album took a left turn somewhere and they followed it.
