HTDAAB vs POP

1. Vertigo vs Discotheque -- The first of many tough decisions…but Discotheque kicked so much ass when it came out. Sounded original and from another planet.
2. Miracle Drug vs Do You feel Loved – Another toughie, but Do You feel Loved is one of their most underrated songs – such a groove to it
3. Sometimes You Can’t make It On Your Own vs Mofo – Both songs about parents gone, but to me the emotion come through more on SYCMIOYO, and it may be one of their best videos ever!
4. Love & Peace vs If God Will Send His Angels – Tough decision but Love & Peace may be on the best songs U2 has done in this part of their career. So brutal and honest, it’s like a bizarre universe of something from the WAR album
5. City Of Blinding Lights vs Staring At The Sun – I’m in the minority that doesn’t mess himself over COBL. It’s a good song but it doesn’t make me want to go berserk. Staring at the sun doesn’t either, but I think it signaled anew direction for U2’s song writing and therefore is more iconic than COBL.
6. All Because Of You vs Last Night On Earth – Once again in the minority that likes ABOY. I think it’s a rocking song and sounds like the band just basically going to town with amps up to ‘11’!
7. A Man And A Woman vs Gone – No contest. Gone. One of the top 5 U2 songs of all time. All time.
8. Crumbs vs Miami – I love Miami but there’s a vibe to Crumbs that is so in-your-face…Crumbs
9. {B} One Step Closer [/B] vs The Playboy Mansion – Haunting versus Smart ass. I’m gonan go with haunting, even if I am one of the smart asses myself.
10.Original Of The Species vs If You Wear That Velvet Dress – Damn..this one was hard. While I dig Original’s three choruses (or is that Chorusi?) Velvet Dress holds some special memories for me…I won’t divulge her name but…we had a great six months….ahhhhh…
11.Yahweh vs Please – Tough one again…I went with Please cos of the vibe it conveys. Kind of late night, going somewhere, getting to something. Yahweh is the daylight to Please’s night time mood.
12. Fast Cars vs Wake-Up Dead Man – Fast Cars. No contest.

War vs The Unforgettable Fire

1. Sunday Bloody Sunday vs A Sort Of Homecoming
(SBS may be a classic but ASOH is one of U2's most gorgeous songs and the first verse gets me every time.)
0-1

2. Seconds vs Pride
(Seconds really can't compete with the anthemic power of Pride.)
0-2

3. New Year's Day vs Wire
(Wire's a great song but NYD outclasses it on every single level.)
1-2

4. Like A Song vs The Unforgettable Fire
(I love Like A Song but it simply isn't sonic genius like UF.)
1-3

5. Drowning Man vs Promenade
(Toughest choice of them all and I could easily change my mind.)
2-3

6. The Refugee vs 4th Of July
(4th Of July links Promenade and Bad perfectly, but on a song-to-song level, it stands no chance.)
3-3

7. Two Hearts Beat As One vs Bad
(THBAO never stood a chance.)
3-4

8. Red Light vs Indian Summer Sky
(An easy victory.)
3-5

9. Surrender vs Elvis Presley And America
(As much as I appreciate EPAA, this is an easy victory in War's favour.)
4-5

10. 40 vs MLK
(40's the more substantial song.)
5-5

Final results:
War - 5
The Unforgettable Fire - 5

That surprised me.

War vs The Unforgettable Fire

1. Sunday Bloody Sunday vs A Sort Of Homecoming
Both songs are remarkable. There is this beauty to Homecoming, but the anthemic power of Sunday Bloody Sunday cannot be denied.
2. Seconds vs Pride
Seconds has a cool bass line, but Pride is Pride. I get all emotional everytime the "but they could not take your PRIDE" line is sung.

3. New Year's Day vs Wire
I agree with Axver, Wire is a great song. The bass is so strong. But, the bass in NYD isn't just strong - it's in that "lift-off" area U2 talks about. And, when Bono is on, his singing is so haunting during this song.

4. Like A Song vs The Unforgettable Fire
Okay, I could take heat for this, but I've never been a fan of UF. I understand that the sonic layers are impressive - that is to say, i respect the song. Like a Song has a real sort of political rage that i understand.

5. Drowning Man vs Promenade
I've always felt that Drowning Man was boring. Promenade is my favorite track on this cd...yes Bad is the ultimate live, but as far as the album is concerned, this track is the very heart of this album.

6. The Refugee vs 4th Of July
I thought about just quoting Axver here, but...what the hell, just read.

7. Two Hearts Beat As One vs Bad
I can get into the groove that is Two Hearts, but um, I mean Bad!

8. Red Light vs Indian Summer Sky
Indian Summer Sky...one of the many under appreciated U2 songs.

9. Surrender vs Elvis Presley And America
Good job U2 for experimenting with Elvis Presley and America, but yeah, Surrender is a better track.

10. 40 vs MLK
40.

War-6
UF-4

This sort of proves what I've thought the past two days. Whereas comparing albums like this is fun, it's not fair. I love the UF album, whereas I like the War album. Of course I'm the one who started this thread, and I do not think we should stop. Still, this comparison doesn't reflect my feelings regarding the respective albums as wholes.

This is why I love U2. Well, one of many reasons I love them. JT and AB are soooooooo different from each other and yet sooooooooo good. Do you realize how lucky you we for U2 to have put out those two albums in about a four-year span? It's almost unfathomable that they can change so much yet remain so great.
