9. Fortunate Son

Your U2 fan licence has been revoked. Everyone is meant to hate that cover. :tsk:

Actually, personally, I think much of the trashing of Fortunate Son should be redirected at the studio version of Party Girl. Now if ever there were a bad example of Bono singing, that's it!

North and south of the river
Sweetest Thing
Silver and gold
Summer rain
Lady with the spinning head
Salome
Spanish eyes
Walk to the water

[I don't know why people are including "Levitate", "Xanax & Wine", "Mercy". Those are outtakes, not b-sides. If so, they would've been comercially released... on singles.]

sigh. here we go again.

People are including them because they aren't nitpicking High Fidelity-ers. In conversational discussion a B Side isn't as rigid a term as everyone makes it out to be.

And because they are great songs and technically, if you don't include Live tracks or remixes, U2 has only released 5 B Sides this decade.

A fan's gotta do what a fan's gotta do. I count Mercy, Levitate and Smile as B Sides the band just wasn't smart enough to include on a single.

Not that singles really ever come out anymore.

My favorite b-sides are

Red Light *
Two Hearts Beat As One **
4th Of July #
MLK ##
Running To Stand Still %
Bullet The Blue Sky %
Love Is Blindness +
Your Blue Room ++

*(from Japan 7' of Sunday Bloody Sunday)
**(Fron German "40" single)
# (From Pride Single)
## (From The Unforgettable Fire Australia 7")
% (From In God's Country US Single / One Tree Hill New Zealand Single)
+ (From Numb Video Single)
++ (From Staring At The Sun Single)

Thank you! I read through the first few of these and thought "who are these people!!??" Walk to the Water is not just my favorite B-side, it might be my favorite U2 song ever. Certainly in the top 3. The lonely people on the streets, the bubbly instrumentation, the aching desparation in Bono's voice. It's absolutely gorgeous.

You'd better not think Elvis Presley & America is filler

 It's another, far greater song played backward with an obviously sloshed Bono attempting to be coherent. I call 'em as I see 'em.

LemonMelon! I had no idea you felt this way about U2's greatest album...I think a little piece of me just died *singletear*
