The Smashing Pumpkins/Mercy connection

Does anyone else, especially in the chorus, feel a resemblance in Mercy and The Smashing Pumpkins? The first time I listened to this, it reminded me of something off of MACHINA. It is very dark, and just for some reason makes me think I am listening to track #16 on MACHINA.

Anyone see a similiarity?

I get the Echo and The Bunnymen thing as well, but I get the Pumpkins thing too, it's like something from the out takes CD Machina II.

In fact, all the heavily saturated distortion and clipping on HTDAAB have that Machina I/II sound.

Yeah, I can see that. I can say that the chorus in 'One Step Closer' reminds me a lot of of 'Thirty-Three' by Smashing Pumpkins.
