Well, we've recently brought back the Survivor tournament, so I'm bringing back something else that has cropped up on EYKIW every now and then over the last few years: "U2's history if I had my way".

Why just re-order one album's tracklist? Why merely feel baffled as to why a song wasn't a single? Why simply complain that U2 don't release enough live material? Those of us who were insane and bored enough to make our own custom U2 histories figured it's no good to just talk, or to do a little bit: you might as well just change the entire course of history to suit your tastes and/or what you think would have been best.

It's been over a year since the last custom history that I've seen. Back when there were a few on the first page of EYKIW, I made my own extremely thorough custom history in a prolonged fit of intense boredom, but I decided not to post it to avoid flooding the board. Well, since it's been so long and a couple of people expressed interest in the custom histories on another thread, here it is. When I started it, I knew it was far too much for a single post, so I made a blog to keep it in order.

So here it is, in all of its insanity: Axver Revises U2.

As I made it last year, it predates the Joshua Tree's re-release, so the newly available songs don't figure in my tracklists. Looking at it now, I'm still happy with my versions of JT and its singles, but I'd probably tweak my re-issue to include the new songs somehow.

Anybody else have any custom histories they'd like to share?

I need to dig up that one I posted here a while back. I'll re-post when I do.

Wow, your entire thing is amazingly thorough and a fun read. I loved the Everlasting River idea and adjusted Achtung playlist.

Thanks guys - I was wondering if anyone would take a look at it! :)

Wow, so not everyone hates my version of Achtung!

Honestly, if Achtung had been released with that tracklist, it would probably be my #4 U2 album rather than #11.

Well, in 1977, Edge accidentally created a portal to another dimension when tinkering with his custom made home guitar. Bono, obviously, wanted to go explore it, and was subsequently vapourized. Meanwhile, Ali went on to marry the school's soccer captain, Adam began a lifelong drug and alcohol abuse habit, and Larry, racked with grief, became a butcher.

In the next chapter, Bono comes back in time to meet future Bono, and the two pair up for one last adventure(tm) to save the band in 1977.

I wrote one that I've yet to finish, but I'll be doing so soon, and then I'll post it here.

Is Bono dressed in a demented bunny costume?

how is this not going in the fan fiction section?

Why the hell would it go there? It doesn't belong with that shit. This is just all those "post your own mix of UF" or "what would your tracklist for JT as a double album be?" or "why wasn't Gone a single?" threads taken to a very thorough logical conclusion. It's right at home on EYKIW.

Evidently Canadiens thoroughly missed that even more than you did, but I don't expect him to post anything in response to me that isn't condescending or derogatory anyway.

Ah well, on a more positive note, I'm looking forward to seeing phillyfan's tracklists.

I dug mine up from one of the older threads. For some reason, when I posted it, most people who replied were immensely sarcastic and insulting towards me. I don't know why. But anyway, mine doesn't have as many differences as Axver's but it's still fairly different.

Some of the alternate choices there are pretty surprising. Probably the most is October as a single. How come that and not, say, Rejoice or Fire or even I Fall Down? I cannot at all imagine October as a single.

I do quite like what you did with Boy's tracklist, and shifting SATT to the IWF single.

I did consider I Fall Down but basically, it came down to personal perference. October also did become the most played track from October besides Gloria so I would imagine that it did have some sort of connection with the fans. It being a single would only increase the support behind it.

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I read over your revised albums and singles. I like a lot of the choices you made, especially the revised U218. I was curious though of how HMTMKMKM would fit into Passengers, given the fact that it's a heavy guitar rock song and the rest of the is much more experimental and less guitar driven.

Ah, right. I still can't imagine it being played on radio - but people have reported hearing songs like Bad from WAIA on radio, so evidently not all stations feel the need to play perfectly tailored pop hits.

It doesn't quite fit with most Passengers material, true. But I've always thought it sounds good after United Colours; the two would have worked well together live, I think. Use United Colours to segue into HMTMKMKM, as it has a murky heaviness. So I think it's a good one-two punch to open the album. Then One Minute Warning doesn't sound out of place after it and leads into the more experimental theme. I think having HMTMKMKM there in the first couple of tracks is also essential to suck in the mainstream listener who might otherwise not give it a chance or just write off the album as pointless noise.

It's not fanfiction because none of the alternate tracklistings includes Bono having hot monkey sex with someone.

That I know of, anyway. :shifty:

Oh yes, it's so fanfic (despite the fact that, you know, I hate that kind of bollocks). So are all those threads where people post that alternate ATYCLB tracklist or how they think RAH's tracklisting could've been if it were a studio album. Better move them all!

But hey, Brau, reading my earlier post addressing the question would've been too much hard work, eh?

Axver, your blog scares me to be honest

was this you?

I like alot of the idea's on here, especially the For The Love Of Lovetown album, how amazing would that have been

Some of the tracklists here are pretty interesting, I like the Rattle And Hum one in particular, which I always felt would have been much better without the live-cuts. It would have been tighter and more concise, I think it was the album's scrapbook feel which led to it being so widely criticised, (despite being a massive seller) U2 could have avoided or at least lessened the backlash by ensuring that only the film contained the live performances.

Overall I like the AB tracklist, but I'm not sure Slow Dancing really fits, I think it's too contemplative and tender to really sit comfortably alongside the spiky and industrial sounds of the rest of the collection, but I do like the inclusion of Lady With The Spinning Head which slots seamlessly into place after MW.

The titles are great Turbulence really reflects the uncertainty of much of Pop (love that TOURbulence pun  ) and I agree about HTDAAB, when I first heard Solar doing the rounds I thought that'd make a great title and a real contrast after the lengthy ATYCLB, or perhaps even the much mooted title of Man. One of the problems with Pop was the fact that after Gone the album really has no more up-tempo numbers, it meanders a bit, they needed something a bit more adrenaline pumping between IYWTVD and Please (which wouldn't have been neccessary of course had Please reflected the live versions), there seems to be a good balance between the speedier and slower paced songs on your alternative list, LNOE works better earlier on and SATS is well placed to pep things up towards the end. Oh and I think North And South of The River did work better as a B-Side. I quite like Gone as a closing number although I recall Bono saying at the time that it needed to be put at the halfway point because it was the timebomb which had been ticking since the start and had now finally exploded.

What an amazingly exhaustive and comprehensive peice of work though:)
