alright, I know this has been done before, but I wanna make a U2 mix for my friend to get her into them...she loves Bruce Springsteen and generally likes "90s music" like Matchbox 20, Barenaked Ladies, Oasis, whatever...she likes One and Sunday Bloody Sunday, but NOT Beautiful Day...

so with that in mind what do you think a good mix of 14-16 songs would be? nothing too insane like Mofo though.

thanks. :)

edited: sorry, forgot to add she already has One, SBS, Streets, Still Havent Found, and Mysterious Ways, so you don't need to include those.

I thought you were gonna ask what song plays before U2 comes on stage

Nothing crazy like Mofo? i'm guessing no "numb" or "lemon" then either... alright...so she knows SBS and One, any of the others? Might as well put some of the classics on there anyway...

1. Where the Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (since Bruce did it with them! if you can find a recording of that from the RRHoF then your friend might like that)
3. Desire
4. Fire
5. One
6. Until the End of the World
7. Even Better Than The Real Thing
8. Discotheque (this is the song that got ME into U2 anyway)
9. Staring at the Sun
10. Drowning Man
11. Like a Song...
12. Sunday Bloody Sunday
13. Bullet the Blue Sky
14. Exit
15. Love and Peace or Else
16. Out of Control
17. Pride (In the Name of Love)
18. Stay (Farway, So Close!)

will that all fit onto one disc??

Typhoon...come on.

you know as well as I do that you can't fit Lemon onto a CD 142 times. Unless you make an mp3 CD... :hmm:

Well... since she likes 90s music, give her 90s!

1. Even Better Than The Real Thing
2. Until The End Of The World
3. The Fly
4. Who's Gonna Ride (single/temple bar mix)
5. Hold Me Thrill Me...
6. Zooropa
7. Stay
8. Miss Sarajevo
9. Please
10. Gone
11. Discotheque
12. Do You Feel Loved
13. Staring At The Sun
14. Ultraviolet
15. Acrobat
16. Love Is Blindness

Something like that?

I didn't include One since you say she has it already.

I just put together a really great mixed CD, the tracklisting of which was determined by playing all U2 studio recordings on random on my computer. It was a fluke, but this mix is really, really good (although a bit heavy on recent songs, perhaps)

1. Zooropa
2. Love and Peace or Else
3. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
4. Miracle Drug
5. If You WearThat Velvet Dress
6. Smile
7. Bullet The Blue Sky
8. Gone
9. Bass Trap (edit)
10. All Because of You
11. Sometimes You Can't make It On Your Own
12. Mercy
13. Your Blue Room

That's much better than the atrocious 1990-2000 Best Of. The only glaring omission is One (though I'd also put Lemon and maybe Numb on there), other than that I really think that would have been a better Best of. They could have saved all the ATYCLB stuff for the next Best Of.

you ended with the holy trinity

Thanks.

I didn't include Numb and Lemon cos VertigoGal didn't want any experimental stuff like Mofo here. Also, I'm pretty sure that a new fan will enjoy Numb a lot more with the video. That's how I heard it first.

Oh... and the holy trinity has to be included!

Can't believe that was created by random. That would flow unbelievably well.

Hmm, lets give some classics from the 80s and some nineties.
1.I Will Follow
2.Gloria
3.New Years Day
4.Two Hearts Beat as One
5.Pride
6.Where the Streets Have no Name
7.In Gods Country
8.One
9.Until the End of the World
10.The Fly
11.Mysterious Ways
12.Stay(faraway so close)

It wasn't too long ago when i was initially introduced to u2, and i was much more interested in listening to the studio versions of the songs first.

Oh... and I would replace Out Of Control with I Will Follow, but that's just me. I don't like OOC all that much.

Okay, I'm tempted to make up yet another list now.

1. I Will Follow
2. New Year's Day
3. Sunday Bloody Sunday
4. Pride
5. Bad (Live Aid)
6. With Or Without You
7. Running To Stand Still
8. One Tree Hill
9. Desire
10. All I Want Is You
11. One
12. The Fly
13. Until The End Of The World
14. Stay
15. Discotheque
16. Gone
17. Please

Usually you can fit about 17 songs in an 80 minute cd. So there you go!

Shit! But Bad (Live Aid) is gonna kill it. :|

ok, since you asked

1. AIWIY first song? And live at that? The strings in the album version make that song 100 times better. Thumbs down.
2. Well if you're gonna put an early one this is a good one, if she's into 90's and Bruce Springsteen, I don't see it. Thumbs down
3. One Tree is a great song, I'll cut you some slack Thumbs up.
4. The Fly=thumbs up
5. RTSS=thumbs up
6. Interesting choice for a person who doesn't like Beautiful Day.
I could see the same person thinking both songs are annoying. Thumbs down.
7. Pride=uhhh, I'd be shocked if she's never heard this tired rocker. But the album version is superlative. Thumbs Up
8. Desire=a little boring, why not go live here with a ZooTV version? That version was much more interesting. Thumbs down
9. IALW=thumbs way down
10. Acrobat=thumbs way up
11. NYD=thumbs up, still a great song, although overplayed
12. Stay=thumbs way up
13. Live Bad works, I would have put the Wide Awake In America version, but nonetheless good choice. Thumbs up
14. UTEOTW=outstanding choice thumbs way up
15. Please live Rotterdam, outstanding thumbs way up
16. a little iffy here, I think the album version of Walk On is tremendous especially compared to the live versions. Thumbs down

that's 10/16 from me. which is about 2/3
If she likes 2/3 of it, I'd say it was a successful attempt.

interesting analysis U2MDFan, it's appreciated. :)

she asked me to put Desire and Discotheque on there, so that's the reasoning for that.

I'm considering replacing Out of Control too...as much as I want to give her a good overview of them, it might be too "punky" for her.

I actually don't like Pride much, but she wants a few songs she's heard before.

I know All I Want is You is a weird opener, but I think it kinda works...what do you think would be a better opener out of the songs I listed? As far as the strings, well they put my cd over the time limit! I don't think she'll miss them, judging by her taste in other music.

and what do you have against In A Little While? :madspit:

considering using album version of Walk On, but I like the hallelujahs..

How about open it with Pride.
It's something she probably knows, and she'll probably dig it right away. I think Pride leads off the actual Best of 80-90, I like it as an opener. It's become so tired live, that it sounds good as an album cut coming right out of the box, just my personal take.

In a Little While?
I don't know, I don't get into Bono trying to sound like a soul singer, it annoys the shit out of me.

alright, I really don't like Pride, I'm replacing it with Gloria (yeah, it's punky as well but she likes Sunday Bloody Sunday). Staring at the Sun is replacing Out of Control.

new order is:

1. One Tree Hill
2. All I Want is You
3. The Fly
4. Running to Stand Still
5. Staring at the Sun
6. Gloria
7. Discotheque
8. Desire
9. In a Little While
10. Acrobat
11.New Year's Day
12. Stay
13. Bad
14. Until the End of the World
15. Please
16. Walk On

I like One Tree Hill as an opener, actually. Anyway, she won't be picky about the flow...

isn't it amazing how much of an ordeal it is to make a mix?
