I'm really not sure about picking Stuck over ISHFWILF, though. And One Tree Hill and WILATW would be pretty close to tied. I do love Exit, but I'm pretty sure I'd take New York over it. JT got 7 and ATYCLB 4, which is about what I would have expected.

What surprises me a lot is how many people tied Beautiful Day and Streets. I do love Beautiful Day, but I don't think it ever made quite the connection with me that it did with a lot of people. Great great song...but Streets, as far as I'm concerned, has an emotional and even spiritual quality that BD never comes close to touching. But Streets is my favourite U2 song.

Though I'd have to admit that BD probably has better lyrics than Streets.

I was thinking the same thing. I can't believe how many people had BD and Streets in a tie, or even ranked BD ahead of Streets. I've never thought BD was this classic song everyone else seems to think it is. Sure, the chorus is great, but the verses just seem to drag. And even my favorite part of the song (the part where Bono is singing "touch me, take me to that other place/Reach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case"), doesn't move me the way any part of Streets does.

I think both Streets and Beautiful Day are great album openers and great songs. If I analysed them closer I'd say that BD has a better, punchier chorus while Streets has the most incredible opening I've ever heard, which in fact is so good that sometimes I feel like the rest of the song doesn't really measure up to it.

I think that's actually most true of the live versions. I think that the opening of Streets live--before Bono even starts singing--may constitute the most amazing thing U2 has ever done (and possibly the most amazing thing they will ever do.) And it's true that the rest of the song live, especially when you're just listening and not actually there, never takes you quite as high again. In the studio version, I feel like there are more peaks--there is a bit near the end where the guitar makes me feel like I'm traveling forward at intense speed--but none of the peaks reach quite as high as the live opening.

the joshua tree: best or 2nd best album the band has made, compared to an album that is somewhere in my cd pile!

and believe me there are a lot of cds in that pile!

anyway the local commercial stations are doing a pretty damn good job of 'murdering' Beautiful day by playing it to death

good thing i only listen to cds when im driving on the car, or just listen to the radio at night, which keeps me in track with the music scene and theres no chance of overly played songs that get played during the day to be murdered at that time- perhaps...

I think its strange, when i compare them like in this thread its a close race. But i really think that ATYCLB is a better album. At least, i rarely listen to TJT, but i often listen to ATCLB, without skipping any songs. When listening to TJT I almost always skip BTBS, TTYW and MOTD. I never really liked BTBS, until the Elevation tour. But the best album is and always will be Achtung baby, imo.
