It's 00.27 am and I'm listing to Heartland.. (after I listened to the live version of Bad on R&H)
It's so amazing.
I'm gonna shut up now so I can listen closely. (I will say this only v-once)

I just read every post in this hilarious thread! To be honest, I'd never put that much thought into Heartland. I knew it was U2 excellence but it seemed to hold a postion on the fringes of my U2 obsession. Well, no more! This thread has reignited my passion for Heartland. Thanks:wink:

This thread has only showed me how far some people will go with their worship. There are 180 replies and about 50% is just 2 people!!! Ridiculous. I love Heartland, it's one of the most gorgeous songs they ever wrote. But this is pushing it. And the 90s fans get blamed for Achtung/Pop worship. Yeah right!

We're just getting our own back for all the nineties worship that's shoved down our throats.

All hail Aardvark the Great, Mighty Overlord of Heartland!

Though I don't have to bow. I'm the Co-dictator of the World with my girlfriend, so I also get to reign over Heartland.

Basically the entire last verse, but I suppose, in particular, when it gets to this bit...

..."Into the side of love
Like a burning spear
And the poison rain
Brings a flood of fear
Through the ghostranch hills
Death Valley waters
In the towers of steel
Belief goes on and on..."

I'm trying to choose a favourite line, but it's so hard. This song is so majestically poetic, most certainly one of Bono's finest achievements.

"... of deserts dry
Of cold green valleys
Gold and silver mines
Of the shining cities
In this heartland ..."

I love Edge's backing vocals.

How about the whole bloody song?

People, bow before Bono's lyrical brilliance.

(Taken from U2Wanderer.org because I'm too lazy to type it out myself.)

See the sun rise over her skin
Don't change it
See the sun rise over her skin
Dawn changes everything
Everything
And the delta sun
Burns bright and violet

Mississippi and the cotton wool heat
Sixty-six a highway speaks
Of deserts dry
Of cool green valleys
Gold and silver mines
Of the shining cities

In this heartland
In this heartland soil
In this heartland
Heaven knows this is our land
Heartland... heartland

See the sun rise over her skin
She feels like water in my hand
Freeway like a river cuts through this land
Into the side of love
Like a burning spear
And the poison rain
Brings a flood of fear
Through the ghost-ranch hills
Death valley waters
In the towers of steel
Belief goes on and on

In this heartland
In this heartland soil
In this heartland
Heaven knows this is our land
Heartland / Sing song, sing song
Heaven knows this is our land
Heartland / Sing song, sing song
Heaven knows this is our...
Heartland / Sing song, sing song
Heartland... heaven's day here in the heartland
Heart... (land)

I have to disagree with U2Wanderer's 'Heaven knows this is our land'. It's definitely 'Heaven knows this is a heartland' to my ears.

Yeah...ditto - it's always been 'this is a Heartland' to me.

Is that 'Heaven's day..." bit def. right do u think? I never bother singing that line! Cos he sings so quiet, it's like he actually misses the line!

This is my version of the final verse (sans backing vocals):

... belief goes on and on
In this heartland
In this heartland soil
In this heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland
Heartland
Heaven knows this is a heartland
Heartland
Heaven's day ... [peters out]
Heartland
Heaven's day here in a heartland [obvious]
Heeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaart ...

I'm going to type out the whole damn song just for fun. The lyrics are so beautiful.
