In the past few days I've become interested in the Grateful Dead (before that the only thing about the band that I knew even vaguely was Cherry Garcia ice cream). I was wondering if any other Dead fans here (are there any?) could help me out a bit:
What are their most popular songs and albums? What are your personal favorite songs/albums? Thanks!

Hey mug222:

Part-time Deadhead here!

Most popular songs - ALBUMS:
Truckin', Friend of the Devil, and Ripple - AMERICAN BEAUTY
Uncle John's Band, Casey Jones - WORKINGMAN'S DEAD
Touch of Grey, Throwing Stones, Hell In A Bucket - IN THE DARK

Best SOngs:

Dark Star, St. Stephen/Eleven/Turn On Your Lovelight - LIVE DEAD
China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Jack Straw - EUROPE '72
Scarlet Begonias, Unbroken Chain - MARS HOTEL
Box of Rain, Ripple - AMERICAN BEAUTY

Generally, I like their live albums best, and there are TONS of them; they had an archivist, the late Dick Latvala, who began a still-running project of releasing their best shows on CD commercially, the "Dick's Picks" series. The best eras are 1969-1972, 1977-1980, and early 1990s.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
