Not sure if it is legit or not, but it raises a good debate.

U2 is against the use of their songs in commercials (though their songs have been used for Sporting Commercials and the Olympics).

However, if the $25 Million they will get for letting the car company use Streets is donated to charity, than think of all the good the money will do.

What a great legacy the song will leave, if it ends up feeding or saving the lives for 1000's of people.

I say U2 should do it and donate the money. What does everybody else think?

the more u2 fans even consider this, the more disallusioned i get. this shouldnt even be a question.

there are other ways u2 could donate 25 million dollars, like for instance, their massive paycheques.

like their best of cds

like their tours

do they need any more? ofcourse not. but im not going to tell them that, cause its their money and its their right to chose how they want to spend it.

but to sell out now, and with that song, to a car company would seriously hurt me. thats terrible they even consider it.

best buy, microsoft, target and now what? mercedes?

this is the single worst news item ive read about the band.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

I HATE IT when bands whore themselves. I don't care whether it's for "charity" or not. I don't want the songs that mean so much to me forever associated with a product. It's been hard enough with songs from "Tommy" used to sell snot remedies; I don't want to think of some fucking car every time I hear Streets. If they want a legacy, donate the money up front.

Did I miss something here? The article stressed the fact that U2 DID NOT sell any songs throughout their career to Microsoft back in '92 and DID NOT sell WTSHNN to a car company. Therefore, I don't know what you are talking about.

(although the Best Buy and Target deals clearly straddled the line of the S-word)

No indication of what car company this actually is? Not that it really matters, but I'm kind of interested. The song is a very "open road" type of song, so it would work great in a commercial. But I really hope they don't do it.

Change is the only constant

Here in IL there has been an organ donation commerical running with Beautiful Day, Jesse White, the secretary of State in IL, and the Olympic guy whose last name is Klug who had a liver trasplant and won a medal at the games. I don't really think supporting organ donation is "selling out" It saves lives and it is a selfless act. I'm not sure how they got the song though.

You're such a git. Now you're getting upset by the fact that a company even approaches U2 about using a song. It's not like U2 said "yes." Did they discuss it? Sure - and why not? But in the end, they felt that "Streets" was too special. Yet, even though U2 said "no" - there you are complaining how it was the "worst news yet."

*beats bear!

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with artists allowing their music to be used in commercials. It, in no way, makes them sellouts. I'm sick of hearing people whine about the "sanctity" and "integrity" of the music and how it's being compromised by the "evil" corporations. PLEASE! IT'S MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People listen to it and they enjoy it. Sometimes a song can mean something special to someone, and that's fine. However, you shouldn't get upset because that song was in a commercial. There's nothing evil about advertising. Come back to earth everyone. There are more important things in life.

It wouldn't really bother me. Hell they already use a Smiths song, a Cult song, an STP song in car commercials. If it wasn't for a Nick Drake song used in that one car commercial, I would of never of heard him, and would of never found his other songs, thus never being introduced to the great artist he was.

The more of these I drink the more Bono makes sense.. - Bean from the KROQ Breakfast with U2.

Some songs I wouldn't care. Music licensing is a reality, there you go, so what.

But Streets, the pinnacle of "God is in the House" in every live U2 concert for me? I would rather die. Might as well imprint ads for Viagra or Chia Pets on the wafers at church.

since the carachters who attacked me think they are so informed, it begs the question if they in fact did read the article from top to bottom. let me quote:

"U2 are still trying to work out if they can come to some agreement with the
yet undisclosed motor company. They would really like to use this money in
funding AIDS awareness in Africa and also other home grown causes such as
Goal."

does this sound like a solid "no" to you?! ofcourse not! it sounds to ME as if theyre still negotiating something here.

and yes advertising is evil.
but i must live with it. its life.

I suggest we all take a step back and breathe a little bit.

Nothing is final, who knows if it's really true or not. I don't even like reading half of the stories on the net(about U2) cause most of them get so many facts wrong.

I'd personally like U2 to never give a song to a commerical. A real commerical, not some NFL thing or Olympic highlight with the coca-cola logo planted on the screen.

u2 can do what they want. People change their minds all the time.

I do agree with Bear in saying that they could just give the money themselves, they don't need Ford to do it for them. but it is their money.

let's just let them do what they want. if U2 are "sellouts", then so be it.
