Thanks for the post mikal.

I don't know about Korn though?

And the Beach Boys at #45? Pet Sounds alone should land them in the top 15.

Hey, I was just going to post this!

But here's some more about their criteria..

This is "Spin's" definitive look at 50 great bands from the 1960s forward. To qualify
the editors at "Spin" set out clear criteria, these groups had to have a roof-raising,
history-changing sound, presence, or hairstyle. They also had to clearly influence
today's music in undeniable ways. Finally, they had to be bands that spawned a
special emotional attachment to their fans.

These lists are silly anyway-but who could argue w/ The Beatles-not me.

Hey! Thanks for the info Gina! Looking at that criteria though, it still seems like U2 should be higher on that list.

The Beatles learned everything they know from The Beach Boys

That's somewhat debatable. Both Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson were competitive inspirations to one another. Rubber Soul influenced Pet Sounds which influenced Sgt. Pepper's. The Beach Boys only briefly dwelt on the same level as the Beatles.

just because The Beach Boys were along long enough to become god awfull terrible in the end doesn't mean you should mock them

rubber soul influenced Pet Sounds in making Brain Wilson see that he should use all of his talents to make every song on an album worthwhile and that an album is not just a collection of singles and some fillers

Wilson practically invented all of what modern music has to teach us about harmonies and inventive use of instruments + studio

I'm surprised at the absence of Nine Inch Nails from that list. Despite any personal issues I have with them, NIN deserve to be on that list before Korn.

Oh Spin. Spin. Spin. Spin. Never ceases to amuse me.

Brian Wilson is VERY talented-as are The Beach Boys.

But that Stamos thing
icon30.gif
-oh well, at least he has good taste in music.

He can only DREAM of being as gorgeous as Larry

and of being half the drummer he is as well.

I agree
Korn shouldn't have been on that list though

It's nice to see Fugazi on that list! They are such a great band. But no Smashing Pumpkins? I would say that they're the best band to come out of the 90's! Man I wish they were still together!

People,people

There was never a top-something list of all time that didn't came out strange or unbelivable. Don't get so excited - next year there will be another top-20,50 or 100 bands, singers, songs or managers of all time, and than we will be saying something simillar to this right now...

Pink Floyd came in at a whopping 49. But the Doors were left out. So you're half blind.

O.K. then I'll play along.
What about Hewy and the news - they were big!!!

On a brighter note - today I heard a rumor from 2 different reliable sources that U2 is coming to Zagreb, Croatia as a part of their tour in August this year. One source is a guy that works for the promotor that organised a depesh mode gig few months ago... and other is a music journalist, so I believe them...

Well if that's the only criteria then how did they manage to leave Slade off that list?

Ok big thumbs up for any magazine that puts the Clash in the top ten though. THEY ARE THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS!!!!!!!

But yeah wtf? korn? I think not....
And stop knocking the Beastie Boys or I'll have to knock some heads. It's not their fault that they got the rump shakin action, doin it like that with the intergalaction. Also mad props for inclding P-Fiunk.

First off, I'll say that the list SHOULD have been titled "50 Most Influential Bands."

The Beastie Boys' ranking surprised me, I will say that. But Nirvana doesn't suprise me at all. Look at all of the bands today that are basically cheap "poppier" rip-offs of that group (Nickelback, Fuel, Tantric, etc.). While Nirvana may have had a short life, they are still probably the most influential band of the 90's.

And the Beastie Boys, while they probably shouldn't have been ranked that high, DO belong on top half of the list because of the influence that they had on hip-hop. They opened the whole hip-hop culture to the "white folks" They were the first white hip-hop act that the established rap community actually respected.

Whether you like them or not, all of the bands in the top ten have had an undeniable influence on music as it is today.

What exactly did Massive Attack do?

NIN should of taken the place of KORN.
Korn really didn't do anything revolutionary.

The more of these I drink the more Bono makes sense.. - Bean from the KROQ Breakfast with U2.

LOL--but so true. Brian Wilson was a musical genius. He actually heard "Good Vibrations" in his head as a complete composition, with all the complex layers and arrangements, before he ever sat down at the piano. I don't have a musical ear strong enough to really appreciate his brand of genius, but other musicians do. His peers recognized it without question, and were stunned by him.

Anyway, no one's ever gonna agree on a list like this. At least most of the right people are on the list, even if the order seems a bit funky to me. The absence of the Rolling Stones in the Top 5 seems very odd.
