In the goal
Bullet the blue sky

In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails into souls on the tree of pain
From the firefly, a red orange glow
See the face of fear running scared in the valley below

The sky
The sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky

In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel and the angel was overcome
You plant a demon seed, you raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses, see the flames, higher and higher

The sky
The sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky

And this guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush
And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down
One hundred, two hundred
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes
Across the mud huts as the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street
We take the staircase to the first floor
We turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes deep into saxophone
And through the walls we hear the city groan
Outside is America
Outside is America
America
See across the field
See the sky ripped open
See the rain coming through the gaping wound
Pelting the women and children who run into the arms of America

The studio version is eerie, but not as good (by lightyears) as the live versions from the subsequent tours.
I also think it's interesting that the band have found ways to make the song sound (somewhat) different on each tour. The ZooTV version is still the best one, IMO, but the other versions aren't bad either.

The ZooTV version was the greatest thing ever

It's a song that makes me shake all the times I hear it.
I always had the impression one can touch the rage, the desperation and the anger that are in this song.
Musically, it's a great song: the guitar, the drums are powerful. and I really like the spoken part.

I also have a personal thing connected to this song, because it was one of the first things that open my eyes to the world and made me want more about the REAL outside world.

Lady Luck I agree with what you said ALL THE WAY!

This song is awesome! The Zoo TV live version totally rocked my socks!!!

That guitar makes me want to scream, lol! I think that's the aim, though. Edge been asked what goes through his head playing it - 'getting the fucking notes right!'

Um, yea, quite.

This is probably U2 at their rawest and most angry, much like Sunday, Bloody, Sunday. Personally, I love that side of U2. Don't get me wrong, I love the softer side just as much, but it's nice to see the passion and determination to speak their minds that they display here. Edge really shows his guitar chops on this song, and Bono's live performances are always electrifying. I'm glad everyone mentioned the Zoo TV version, because that performance was amazing!

The Vertigo version is EVIL
Seriously though, as much as the studio version is terribly outdated, this reworked version makes it amongst their best ever live songs.

Totally a highlight for me, especially in Gothenburg.

 I really love how each version is a little (or a lot!) different, and for me ZooTV wins, hands down. That solo is mindblowing. The closest U2 will ever get to heavy metal.
