I'm all meh in regards to this song. Some solid melody, but the tempo doesn't feel right, the song doesn't really change levels of energy, and the production is a little wierd.

It sounds like 60s pop (not a criticism, just an observation). I expect a big bass line on the chorus like contemporary pop, but it's mostly vocals and very light guitar. Breezy. It's different, not sure if better yet

Dynamics are bit off. honestly i could deal with melodies and campiness. but that choruses, man. why does it get quieter?

The New York Times says Dec 1 release date. Looks like the media lockout is over, as there is a full-on write up of the recording sessions:

Im expecting SOE to be a mixed bag; some songs are more genuine, good, but other scan be poppy and shite.

So far I'm liking it. It does sound like it needs more space, but it's like an REM, Coldplay single, with Beck violins. I love the bass.

Edge wonders if this is going to be played in a bar in 25 years.

The Best Thing isn't going to be played in a bar in 25 weeks.

Ian McCulloch the U2 fan:
"Who buys U2 records anyway? It's just music for plumbers and bricklayers. Bono, what a slob. You'd think with all that climbing about he does, he'd look real fit and that. But he's real fat, y'know. Reminds me of a soddin' mountain goat."
"And as for Bono, he needs a colostomy bag for his mouth."

As this is the album discussion and not best thing, did anyone catch what Bono said on the absolute radio interview?

After a couple listens, I'm thrown for a loop because this sounds more like contemporary Beach Boys than U2. Vocal melody is lovely, but it's so lightweight it feel like it could blow away; not exactly a big mission statement. The fact that it's not bombastic may help, but I actually like my U2 huge and bombastic.

From the NY Times:

U2 released “The Blackout” as a performance video at the end of August. It’s a buzzing, thumping rocker that begins, “Dinosaur wonders why it still walks the earth” and later wonders, “Is this an extinction event”; it also observes, “Statues fall/Democracy is flat on its back.” In writing and rewriting the song, Bono said, “I made it about democracy, not an aging rock star.”

Add Chicago's 93XRT to the list.

“All our best work has that pull between experimental on one hand and pop clarity on the other,” Bono said

It's a shame the pop clarity hand has taken over the last 17 years...
