So, I'm starting to think that "You're The Best Thing About Me" is definitely the lead single, but, the band love "Blackout" and have chosen to simultaneously release that to paid U2.com subscribers. Perhaps "Blackout" isn't particularly radio-friendly, but it's a track that the band themselves love and they want their diehard fans to know that.

The letter received by some fans (all, presumably, U2.com subscribers) may not be as mysterious as we think; it mentions the song and it mentions U2.com. Maybe that's all we need to know. "You're The Best Thing About Me" is the friendly, light song for the worldwide masses - "Blackout" is the song for the fans?

We'll know soon, I suppose. It's very exciting.

Yeah, that's the feeling I'm getting. U2 shooting multiple music videos back to back, plus reports of being "undecided" on a lead single make it seem like we could get more than one tune.

Now, we've got u2enespana saying 'Blackout' promotion will start this week, whilst others are reporting 'The Best Thing' will be released on the 8th.

Your theory sounds pretty likely. I think they could have an 'announcement' single, and a proper 'lead' single soon afterwards.

It makes more sense than pushing a song that tries to be all things to all people (like, imo, The Miracle) and fails. Just release two (Or more) songs that specialise in what you want.

I am thinking Blackout this week as a 'sneak peak' track from the upcoming u2 project, and then Sept 8 is the release of TBT as the 'first single'

Bought this magazine last month, U2 The Complete Story, and currently reading an article on the ZOOTV era. See the reference to their next album, Songs of Innocence and Experience. Article was written in 1992. Hmmm, didn't think this concept has been around that long. :). View attachment 11424

Even before that, see the JT remaster. Bono's been talking about or playing with the 'Songs of' idea for quite awhile. I think it makes for the perfect bookend to their career, and I hope we see Ascent.

Now I'm not saying we're going to see a retirement after this, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a stepping back from the band.

Me too. A sneak peak for all, maybe full track for u2.com subscribers, and then YTBTAM as a single.

New acronym, yay

Someone over on atu2 reckons they heard a mix of The Best Thing.... He doesnt seem too phased by it, but wasnt blown away by the clips we heard last year.

Such a shame that we will get all manner of claims in the coming days, and we won't be able to distinguish the real ones.

atu2 poster has close to 1000 posts.. for what it's worth. full description:

Not sure if this is the single mix or album, or extra outtake. Less annoying sounds in comparison to the kygo event last year. The song starts off with a synth/piano kind of like ordinary love with bono singing. Then larrys drum and bass kick in and it starts to build up. The bass is really what is making up the song. I think kygo may still be on this mix as the chorus sounded pretty same in comparison to the beach clip from last year. Edge is in the background vocal wise when bono sings the chorus "you're the best the thing about me, the best thing to ever happen a boy, you're the best thing about me, you're that trouble that I enjoy". Edges guitar is a little more prominent, definitely repetitive, same from the kygo dj event.
There's actually a decent amount of little guitar here and there like invisible. Sounds very electric and a little distorted, but nothing crazy. The Nile Rodgers comparison is pretty accurate.

and then later

I didn't care for what i heard last year. If you don't like what you heard last year, I'm not sure that will change. It's still "best thing". I thought it sounded better instrument and production wise but I'm more excited about it being u2 album season than this song. This doesn't have as much chaos as the kygo event last year. I thought there were too many beats and drums going. This sounds somewhat rawer but it still has the chorus of the beach clips. That big explosive chorus of "you're the best thing about me.." I didn't hear the lyric "when the world is ours every door smells of fresh paint"

pretty sure the Edge vocal the poster describeds s heard on those last 5 seconds of the Kygo vid. Have a feeling that's part of the chorus hook

Still hoping we get The Blackout soon as well. Or at least some other teaser clips or something. While TBT will be cool to hear in the non-Kygo way, it still won't be a truly new song for us, so that's a bit disappointing.

As for the guy that heard TBT over at @U2, i remember the song being roundly shit upon over there, as many things are. It's sort of a grumpy old man fest over there.

I don't know if TBT is a good choice or not for a lead. Having heard descriptions of the album being more raw and rock, and having deep, emotional lyrics and sitting nicely with their older work, it would seem that the choice of TBT again does not represent the feel of the album as a whole. But this is a new era, and radio is filled with poppy, alt/pop music, so maybe its a decent choice. We shall see.

Hoping tomorrow brings us a little something...

THanks again RD for keeping your ear to the ground for us.

Would be cool if us U2.com members got the blackout as a free download. Maybe wishful thinking though.

Would be a cool marketing thing. Obviously giving a small group of people a different song will have it show up on Social media and sharing sites in a matter of minutes, creating more of a ground up approach while they do the top down approach with TBT.

Still enjoying the speculation and anticipation. Fun times for sure.
