I love the album version of So Cruel but there is something about the early stages of the song that are so special. The hypnotic pulsating effect is so beautiful. It sounds of desparation. It also makes me think of heartbeats. The song that was being built might have been the next Running To Stand Still or Stay.

The five and half minute take where Bono sings 'woman' is tragic and moving. The two tracks with Daniel Lanois's vocalization are incredibly soothing. My favorite take of it is the eight minute version that stops at 5:08 and starts over again. I get shivers when Bono sings "white and alive, and laughing in the face of love." This take might contain Bono's best lyrics on Salome and Achtung Baby.

The climax of the song at 3:17, is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard Bono sing.
"Every beat of your heart
Like the flapping wings of an angel
Your heart beats
Your heart beats
So long, so long, so long
So that was goodbye."
