Actually, what stuff I've read about Catatonia gave an impression of a band that had a massive UK hit album with "International Velvet", then stumbled with the lackluster follow-up, and failed to regain the crown with their third offering. That said, I'll be interested in whatever Cerys Matthews does next, she has one funky voice!

and of course, The Velvet Underground - if you haven't bought the "The Velvet Underground and Nico" (aka "The Bananna Album") you have missed out on one of the most important pieces of music ever released.

Don't forget Joy Divsion

So true. It's sad to think of the songs the world may have known from this talented man had he not passed away.

What's going on here? How long do you want a career? How long is "didn't last long"? Ivan you said Queen.. they were active for almost 20 years!!

If you want a band that really didn't last very long then surely you are looking at The Las. One album, then poor Lee Marvin went mad.

And if people are saying The Smiths and The Verve (they made about three or four albums!) well then you must add The Stone Roses as one of music's greatest missed opportunities. Although Ian Brown still excells, of course.

The Beatles had been going about 10 years!

This should really be called "bands that made one album then disappeared who really shouldn't have".

CrashedCarDriver asked to name " bands in your eyes were big , but were abruptly stopped due to the death of a member ) " , so i named Beatles and Queen.
I still think Queen , were one of those bands ,who ( a big surprise for them , fans and public ) suddenly rise from dark trash to the sun and back in 1991-1992 , they always were themselves right to the end , everything after "Made in Heaven " is not QUEEN .

Totally agree with you DoctorGonzo. I would add the Stone Roses and At The Drive In.

Over thirty responses to this thread, and no one has mentioned the Velvet Underground. Come on, people! All-time greatest American band, only made four albums, etc.
