I agree that "Green Shit" is not necessary.

However, I strongly disagree that Green Day made a better album. I've heard it - and it sounds exactly like 1995's "Dookie". Seems that Green Day's sound becomes popular every 10 years. I guess in 2014/2015, we'll see another Green Day punk revival. But I digress... people are insulting U2 for daring to sound like their past work, but "American Idiot" is just like "Dookie" - no change at all! I was expecting more from Green Day - a LOT more.

I WAS BEING SARCASTIC!!!!! HELLO! Geez man. You guys are something else.... stick to the main topic.

shut up. you were just banging on like a child and flinging that name around how the hell was it sarcastic?

Im I not allowed to express my opinion without someone ripping me apart? Lighten up. Like I said, stick to the subject. Surpass that comment.... jerks.

If you think American Idiot an Dookie are just alike - no change at all - I have no choice but to think you weren't listening closely enough. The Green Day that made Dookie would never have dreamed of making a song like 'When September Ends' or 'Are We The Waiting'.

Why don't you stop being so fucking defensive and get off my crotch you dickhead. I have plenty to say on the topic.

I would actually say U2 are 'selling out', where was this desperate need to be in the public spotlight when ATYCLB came out? For some reason, they plugged Vertigo everywhere and when it came to Apple adopting them they were only too happy to plug the track once again until it got to the point where I just thought U2 were now showing themselves as a bloody brand and not musicians...

Green Day show themselves to be some sort of happy medium...they sell the songs, yes, but that's obviously the way they work...get a bit of extra cash on the side, but their last record showed they were actually making the music FOR the musical side of things!

   Besides being overall based in Punk (even though American Idiot goes way beyond it), they sound nothing alike.

You know, you are being the asshole here. I brought this thread up to talk about something interesting. And yes, Now I am being defensive because of assholes like you. If you can't say anything nice then shut the fuck up!

Don't draw more attention to it. That emoticon is getting overused.

Now everybody cool it.

Well nobody is discussing the original thread anyway. And it is the first time I used the emoticon.

In terms of the topic: No, U2 did not sell out. The iPod is about music and they were promoting their own song! If they gave the song to a patch that prevented sea sickness, then that would be selling out.

Thank you. Someone has something interesting to say for a change.

lol, or if they gave Stuck to a paper towel commercial so they could play it when the glass of milk falls from the counter and onto the floor...or if they gave Desire to a viagra commercial...or if they gave Beautiful Day to a commercial for one of those unidentified purple pills...or if they gave Bad to a commercial about drug addiction...etc etc.

I agree with you.

they dont ALOT more T.V. shows when ATYCLB came out, Beautiful day was used to advertise "the premiership", they done the superbowl, they done the grammys, and MTV awards, so why didnt you say they sold out then?

Doing the superbowl is not selling out. It was more of an honor to be playing at half time. Its by far the best memorable moment in any superbowl half time show. As for the Grammy's.... we are gonna have to wait and see this next time around.

Performing on TV shows has nothing to do with selling out.

Not that I think the IPod thing was selling out either...I don't.

It's only selling out when the band isn't making the music they want to make anymore. And none of us have any way of knowing when that happens, or if it's happened.

on average how much do you spend on a good night out around town? including taxis, something to eat, etc? £100?, so if theres 3 of you out, and you spend £100 each thats £300 gone on what? drink? food?, or you could spend that £300 on going to see your favorite band, doing something you dont get to do every saturday night, and having one of the best nights out ever,

thats my argument against the "oh tickets are too expensive" debate

Holy shit! You'd spend that much on a night out?

...because performing your song at an awards ceremony is a completely different thing than selling your song to advertise a product. You could say "The Premiership" was selling out but it wasn't like Beautiful Day was played in adverts and being associated with everything left right and centre.

Contradiction in terms...

but thats the thing, they didnt get paid to "advertise" the ipod or vertigo, and if they did so what? they are advertising there own song, there own equiptment, but they didnt get paid

but am pretty sure they got some royalties from BD being on the premiership

Ah, another U2 vs. Green Day vs. Coldplay vs. iPod vs. "selling out" vs. namecalling vs. eventually-going-to-get-locked-with-a-moderator-chastising-us thread! My favorite!

It's funny how these conversations keep popping up--and how they always have some sort of cursing, namecalling, and disrespect. Oh well!

Let's instead discuss what it would take for KUEF to take us out on a 300-pound night!

what's new is that u2 ACTUALLY ARE selling out these days.

everything from their website, to ipods (i don't give a shit if they don't see direct money from those ads are not, they're still getting proceeds from the u2 ipods themselves), to making bland music generated for mass consumption.

everyone argues the same thing over and over again, i realize i sound like a broken record.

but so do some of you, make no mistake.

but what i do know is that more and more people have supported the band over the years are fed up with a band that's embarassingly desperate to be noticed in the mainstream.

and is it even really working? after strong first week sales, the album fell off the charts. i'll give atyclb credit for sticking around for as long as did, but their latest offering can't say the same thing.

it's time to fuck trying to be popular, in exchange for trying to be GREAT.

Somehow I am both opposed to and supportive of that diatribe at the same exact time.

Then can they be quiet about it here at a fan site and go start a former fan site?

The forum titles could be:

U2 Sells Out
U2 Charges Too Much For Tickets
U2 Hasn't Made a Good Record Since 1983
U2 Hasn't Made a Good Record Since 1987
U2 Hasn't Made a Good Record Since 1991
Anyone Who Doesn't Want to Read This Should Not Read It Even Though
These Are The Only Threads Here Right Now

(and my favorite) If You Disagree With Me, Fuck Off

Now, why doesn't everyone go listen to records they actually like by bands they won't complain about for a while?

You guys are by far the most annoying group that has replied to anything that I have posted. It is so ridiculous. People have gone of the pace just because I simply made a blooper, called another band some other name and make you guys make smart remarks. I simply brought some thought into this thread so that we can have “fans” have a discussion. Thank you for the ones that actually took part in the topic.

Closed at request of thread starter.

I'm not singling anyone out here but the name-calling and personal attacks in this thread are totally unacceptable. Can we all try to be a little nicer to each other so threads in this forum can stay open and folks aren't getting banned?
