I hope Ian agrees with me that some of the world's best town names are in New Zealand. In fact, chances are we've discussed this before and I'm just too fixated on a dinner I'm very pleased with to really remember.

And more importantly, what does Bono have to do with this thread?

Hell, Bono's only tenuously connected to this forum.

Very, very tenuously in the U2 off-season.

I think we've touched on the subject before. We have some really, really cool names here.

If you're stuck for something fun to do and have an American nearby (or really any foreigner, but I've only done this with Americans), get out a map of New Zealand and see if they can pronounce town names like Whakatane, Ngaruawahia, Pauatahanui, and Paekakariki. Hilarity will ensue, I assure you.

Can i come over for dinner sometime?

Sure. On a night when there's cricket on so that we don't argue about rugby codes.

And bring me some wine, while you're at it. I'm feeling poor.

Maybe Bono could go to Djibouti, or Ousousous???

As I recall, the longest place name in the world is in New Zealand. Or so said Wikipedia once.

That would be Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotameteaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenakitanatahu. The only Maori name I cannot successfully pronounce. The "koauauo" part trips me up every time.

Also, on my fantasy setlist database, U2 rock out Djibouti.

Here you go, Varitek.

I'd rather go the second night, the first night is really strange.

Please tell me you also have U2 rocking out Gibraltar...and Alcatraz...and that rock in the Mediteranean that periodically causes diplomatic snafus....

Oh, I've done some really strange nights that make that one look normal. Try out this one. I used the first word of each song title to make a sentence.

 Not up to them, but Gibraltar is definitely on the list. I'll have to find that rock's name. Maybe Alcatraz, though it's a bit too close to a large population; my tour of the US will avoid all major centres. I'm seriously thinking of having that leg as just 50 shows in Wyoming.

So far, the world tour spent about 10 months in New Zealand, 2 months in the Pacific, well over a year in Africa with a brief deviation to play a series of gigs in Memphis for Khan's birthday (she probably doesn't even remember when we did that as a joke  ), and currently into their second month in the Middle East before heading across southern Asia to Australia, which will feature a two month tour of every cricket ground in Tasmania.

I'll smuggle some off the plane. At least we can have a mutual Wellington appreciation society

Rockin'. Would be best if you brought some wine from just outside Wellington, from Martinborough on the other side of the Rimutakas. Ata Rangi's pinot noir is something special.

Ever been to the Kapiti Coast?

Duly noted.

I've driven through the Kapiti Coast, but in terms of serious visiting i've only made it as far north as Trentham (as in, nowhere seriously near the Kapiti Coast). I do intend on doing more next time because i've done most of the Wellington city area things. Although a few more days in Te Papa wouldn't go amiss.

Ah, right. I'm from Raumati Beach, which is fortunately largely how I left it, but Paraparaumu has turned into an over-commercialised shithole, at least by Kapiti standards. If you're even remotely interested in New Zealand's travel history, Steam Inc. and the Paekakariki Station Museum in Paekakariki, the Wellington Tramway Museum in Queen Elizabeth Park, and Southward Car Museum in Otaihanga are all quite worthwhile.

Although a few more days in Te Papa wouldn't go amiss.

It's true what they say about it taking six days to see everything. I would know; I did it.

I will fully support this endeavour.

I still think Djibouti 1 is stranger than Waiouru.

Really? At least Djibouti I flows! I'm impressed that most of Waiouru I flows, but parts ... don't at all. Especially OOC --> RTSS --> IGC.

Waiouru II, incidentally, is a non-album spectacular.

I'm really lagging behind, i'll blame it on watching the cricket even though i was posting during the most tense part.

I'm writing down your museum suggestions, although i don't think i'll be staying at long next time so it may take me a little while.

Such a great city with a waterfront that doesn't suck. Sigh...

Meanwhile, i suck with North American famous places. I only accurately got the Skydome and the Miller Brewery.

I think I just don't like the live Ito Okashi in Djibouti I.

I thought so! Don't worry, it hasn't been done much:

2005-11-06 - Russell, New Zealand - Russell Town Hall
2005-11-26 - Raumati South, New Zealand - Raumati South Memorial Hall
2006-02-20 - Port Elizabeth, South Africa - EPRFU Stadium
2006-04-24 - Antananarivo, Madagascar - Mahama Sina Stadium

2006-10-11 - Bamako, Mali - Stade 26 Mars
2007-02-15 - Accra, Ghana - Ohene Djan Stadium

(Things begin in January 2005 and I'm currently in June 2007 in the United Arab Emirates.)

Did you take the geography quiz?

No, because I'm too busy postwhoring it up here!
