It's time. We've bitched. We've moaned. We've whinged.

"It's good, but it's missing ____"

"It's a poor representation and..."

"I can't believe it's missing these four songs...."

Interferencers will now reconstruct The Best Of 1980-1990. Sure, we've had threads before saying what could've been, but without (to the best of my knowledge) a cumulative result.

Here's the rules:

1) Your list of tracks can only come from the 80's. I know that "1990" is part of the title, but we all know about the sonic sound-shift that U2 went through by the time 90 rolled around ("Night and Day", anyone?).

2) You can only list whatever would fit on a CD. Make a playlist or add together the runtimes if you have to. If your ballot is obviously over 78 minutes, it won't be counted.

3) A song has to be on at least 65% of the ballots to warrant inclusion. In other words, our definitive U2 compilation of their first decade might not necessarily entail a full compact disc's worth of material.

4) List your preferred mixes if necessary. If the final tally gets to the point where we can squeeze an extra track on if we make one a single mix, then we'll have a runoff vote for such a determination (which song should be shortened, if any, etc...)

You may now begin.

My choices for Interference's Best Of 1980-1990:

1. A Day Without Me - 3:12
2. I Will Follow - 3:37
3. 11 O'Clock Tick Tock - 3:44
4. Fire - 3:51
5. Gloria - 4:12
6. New Year's Day (Single Edit) - 3:53
7. Sunday Bloody Sunday - 4:34
8. Pride (Album Version) - 3:49
9. The Unforgettable Fire - 4:36
10. Bad - 6:09
11. A Sort Of Homecoming (Live From Wembley) - 4:06
12. With Or Without You - 4:56
13. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - 4:37
14. Where The Streets Have No Name (Single Mix) - 4:46
15. One Tree Hill - 5:23
16. Desire - 2:59
17. Angel Of Harlem - 3:47
18. All I Want Is You (Single Edit) - 4:14

Time: est. 76.5 minutes

Why would a ballot be disqualified for being over 78 minutes? A CD can fit 80 minutes.

Three words: Gloria, not October. Otherwise a fine collection as the band put it together.

I'd say, Gloria AND October (and keep that one as the hidden track). And add 11 O'Clock Tick Tock too (the studio version, even though that one is inferior to the UABRS version). And oh, the album version of Bad, the 12" version of Pride and the single version of Where The Streets Have No Name.

But yeah, apart from these remarks, the original collection was good enough (the B-Sides disk too)

Honestly I don't mind the 80-90 Best of, for the most part. There is the odd song I'd change but overally they got it right. Now 90-00 is another story :(

It is still unclear, whether we (U2, too) do talk about a 'real' "Best Of"– something, that doesn't look at the Top Ten in the first degree - or the 'Greatest Hits', it was much more in reality. I chose a kind of '80ies Collection' in both senses, as much a compromise this has to be:

1. Where The Streets Have No Name
2. I Will Follow
3. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
4. The Unforgettable Fire
5. Gloria
6. A Sort Of Homecoming
7. Sunday Bloody Sunday
8. Angel Of Harlem
9. When Love Comes To Town
10. Bad
11. October
12. New Year's Day
13. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
14. Desire
15. Out Of Control
16. With Or Without You
17. Spanish Eyes
18. All I Want Is You
-
hidden track: '40'

The only songs I really miss, should have been on the B-sides disc: A Celebration and 11 O'Clock Tick Tock.

And yes, Gloria instead of October

01 - I Will Follow
02 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
03 - New Year's Day (the real one)
04 - Gloria
05 - I Still Haven't Found...
06 - October
07 - The Unforgettable Fire
08 - Desire
09 - Pride (ITNOL)
10 - When Love Comes To Town
11 - Angel of Harlem
12 - With or Without You
13 - Bad
14 - Where The Streets Have No Name

Hidden track: "40" (New Year's Eve show)

Night and Day is one of my top 10 U2 songs(albeit a cover), though I agree with the previous poster, it should have been included on the second Best of.

Very good list,

Thank you. :)

A Sort of Homecoming (live) is one of those tracks that would make you fall in love with the band instantly. It might have done better than Pride did as a single. I can't understand why they didn't release it either.

Well, this thread died quickly while I was away. I guess I'll post the results, and some that missed/ignored this thread can reply after with their lists.

And Axver, the time limit I imposed was because 80 minutes was truly stretching it.....I don't think I've ever even come across a commercially released CD with much more than 78 minutes.

FROM WIKI: This was Metallica's longest studio album (LOAD), clocking in at 78:59 (If it had run any longer, it wouldn't have played without potentially skipping).

As you can see, you run some risks when you go start compressing too much data onto once disc.

Honestly, had U2 not been able to work out their kinks both creatively and with each other, this two disc set would have covered their career quite well. Doesn't feel like anything in particular is missing.

Honestly, I've made plenty of CDs with barely seconds left and never had a problem. I'm pretty sure I have a couple of commercial CDs with just over 79 minutes of music too.

In any case, here's my listing. Depending on the song edits you use, this can vary a little. My favoured mixes give 79:21 but you can make it shorter with, say, a different mix of Streets or Bad. And, of course, as is my tendency, it has some rarities. I hated cutting Bass Trap between Heartland and Streets as it sounds so good, and Luminous Times, Red Hill Mining Town, and Drowning Man were three other hard removals. Nonetheless, I think this is a very comprehensive "best of". Some obvious hits are missing, but what it lacks in fame, it makes up for in quality and diversity.

1. The Three Sunrises
2. Pride
3. Gloria
4. Treasure (Whatever Happened To Pete The Chop?)
5. Tomorrow
6. The Electric Co.
7. God Part II
