After reading that great U2 Live Documentary book, I decided to see just how bad PopMart did ticket wise. After working on this for about an hour, I have compiled the following.
This is broken by leg in this format :
Leg
Tickets Sold out of Tickets Available
Percentage of Tickets Sold
Average Attendance of Leg/Tour if only 1 show performed
Notes dealing with each leg
At the very end is the complete total for the tour.
Leg I: North America
1,096,553 Out of 1,253,167
87 Percent Tickets Sold
Average attendance – 39162 out of 44755
Only sold out shows on this leg were:
Opening Night Las Vegas 4.25.97
Salt Lake City 5.3.97
Philadelphia 6.8.97
Winnipeg 6.12.97
Edmonton 6.14 & 6.15.97
Los Angeles 6.21.97
Foxboro 7.1 & 7.2.97
9 out of 28 shows sold out
Leg II: Europe
1,498,539 out of 1,854,653
80 Percent Tickets Sold
Average attendance – 46829 out of 57957
Notes: With the exception of the shows in Germany, Sweden and the final France show, every concert was sold out. However, the German shows especially HURT sold-out percentages. German shows alone only sold 146,000 out of 350,000. That is only 41 percent tickets sold. Ouch.
22 out of 32 shows sold out
Leg III: North America
575517 out of 586516
98 Percent Tickets Sold
Average attendance – 33853 out of 34500
Notes: Only shows to NOT sell-out were:
Detroit 10.31.97
Miami 11.14.97
Seattle 12.12.97
14 out of 17 shows sold out
Leg IV: South America/Australasia/South-Africa
690926 out of 718549
96 Percent Tickets Sold
Average attendance – 46061 out of 47903
Only shows to NOT sell-out were:
Melbourne 2.21.98
Brisbane 2.25.98
Tokyo 3.5.98
Osaka 3.11.98
11 out of 15 shows sold out
TOTALS
3,861,535 out of 4,412,885
87 Percent Sold Out
Average Attendance – 41974 out of 47966
56 out of 92 shows sold out
What hurts the avrage attendance was really those Germany shows. They were just horrible. However, what hurts the amount of shows being sold out is from the first leg in America.
Anyway, this was for fun (and out of boredom) if anyone was ever wondering.
