Whatever did happen to Pete the Chop?

As many folks know, Treasure (Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop?) is not the original Chop song. The story goes that Pete the Chop was a friend of a friend & he requested that U2 write a song about him. According to 'Into the Heart,' they did, and it was simply called Pete the Chop. It was apparently a great pop song, and McGuinness & Island loved it. The band, however, thought it was so bubble gum that it'd kill the band. When they finally put it out on the NYD single, they "minced it...turned it around, played it backwards, just sort of fucked it in the ear," according to Bono.

So, is there a recording of the original Pete the Chop floating around out there? I would assume that there is, since it had made its way to Island execs. But, since I've never heard of one....I wonder if the band buried the song as deeply as they thought they'd be if it leaked out..
