In One Tree Hill, it says "Jara sang his song a weapon, in the hands of love You know his blood still cries from the ground"

my question is who is Bono alluding to when he says Jara? Is it short for some biblical character? Can anybody help?

Victor Jara, Chilean singer. At least, that's the only "Jara" I can find that fits the song. Knowing what Bono was into during the writing of JT, this is probably the guy:

It's also worth noting that, according to the NY Times, Richard Nixon ordered the CIA to overthrow President Allende, thus Chile was taken over by Augusto Pinochet, who had Victor Jara (and 3,000) others killed.

can't put a specific date on his death but it was a few days after the summer 1986 amnesty tour ended.
