Ok, What if U2 pulled this stunt everytime...

...they took some time off to record a new album???

Two words: CELINE DION

Now, I have nothing against her personally, though I am not a fan of her music. However, just two short years ago, she made a huge public spectacle of herself, saying she was 'taking a break' and that she wanted to focus her efforts on having a child. They made it sound like she was leaving the music business indefinately. It was perceieved that at least 5 years would pass by without an album, but now... just two years later--> it's her big comeback?@!? WTF?

So... what if U2 did this everytime they took some time off. My god! U2 fans are used to waiting 3-4 years for new material with a new tour... so why the big deal with Celine? Just seems so silly to me, and such a publicity stunt.

I wish her the best, but I see this as damaging to her career, not to mention credibility.

It has been nearly 5 years since her last studio effort in 1997.

Hey, I just noticed I passed 2000 posts. Oooh...

As for the issue at hand, the difference is that Celine REALLY took time off. U2, on the other hand, do not. They are always working on something. For example, between "Zooropa" and "Pop" I once counted well over 20 different recordings. These included solo efforts, "Hold Me...Kill Me", OS1, collaborative efforts, etc. So while it was 4 years between official U2 album releases, there was a TON of material in those 4 years that U2 or U2 members recorded.

The same thing happened between "Pop" and ATYCLB. There was the "Best Of", and Bono collaboration projects. Even now, we have Bono recording with the Corrs and Bono and Edge redoing Stay. So we are still getting new U2-related material!

The only true "dry spell" came between R&H and AB. During that time, I think they wrote a song for the great late Roy Orbison and released "Night and Day." They toured some as well, but no other official recordings were made.

In other words, I think Celine did nothing during her albums, whereas the same can't be said for U2.

Ok, well I have no clue what albums came out when, I am just going on what everyone has been saying. I keep hearing two years. Plus I remember her big good-bye just like it was yesterday.

Anyway, doctorwho, my comment on U2 taking 3-4 years to release an album was not a slight against the band, but rather an observation. I know they are continuously working etc... but the fact remains there has always been a fairly large gap (in comparison to todays 'Pop Stars') bw full albums. I don't have a problem with this at all, because they take their time, and develop new sounds.
I just thought this whole PR stunt (which is what it soooo is) is kinda funny and tried to invision what a frenzy it would create amongst the U2 community, if they were to pull something like this. That's all.

LMAO Salome! I am so surprised that someone as successful as her still doesn't write her own music...

there is a write up on celine dion and her embattled husband in today's national post.
he has apparently been charged with sexual assault...at the same time as his wife's album comes out and she hits the stage. notably the article does talk about both goings ons in the dion world.

[qoute]
from the national post
NEW YORK - Celine Dion leaped yesterday to the defence of her husband, René Angélil, who has been accused of raping a woman two years ago in a Las Vegas hotel.

"You're asking me if I support him?" the singer said firmly as they entered a New York hotel for a round of interviews. "Look into my eyes and tell me if you think I'm behind him."

Mr. Angélil, who also manages Ms. Dion, added the allegations against him "don't stand up."

Las Vegas police say they are investigating a complaint by a woman against Mr. Angélil that was filed four days after she filed a civil suit against the Quebec impresario.

The lawsuit filed in Las Vegas March 19 by Yun Kyeong Sung Kwon and her husband, Ae H. Kwon, alleges Mr. Angélil met Ms. Kwon in March, 2000, at the Caesars Palace casino in Las Vegas. It says Mr. Angélil followed her across Las Vegas Boulevard to the Imperial Palace, sexually molested her in an elevator, followed her into her room, locked the door and forcibly raped her.

The suit accuses Mr. Angélil of assault and sexual battery and asks the court to overturn an unspecified cash settlement the Kwons reached with Mr. Angélil in June, 2000.

Ms. Dion said yesterday she and her husband were frustrated about not being able to defend themselves publicly because Las Vegas District Judge Allan Earl issued a gag order last week, ordering all parties involved not to discuss the case publicly.

The controversy comes as Ms. Dion is launching her comeback album after two years of self-imposed retirement she took so the couple could have their first child.

She and her husband both played down the uproar.

"Whether it came out now or in six months or three years, it wouldn't affect me because I know the real story," Ms. Dion said.

Mr. Angélil said he was confident he would emerge with his reputation intact.

"I have faced worse things in my life," he said, referring to a three-year battle with throat cancer. "This is just a small tempest. It doesn't disturb me at all. We will do what we have to do and I think things will go well for us. The show will go on."

The Kwons are also seeking at least US$130,000 in damages from Mr. Angélil and his business, Coliseum, along with the Imperial Palace hotel-casino in Las Vegas, where the assault is alleged to have occurred.

The lawsuit says Ms. Kwon telephoned hotel officials and reported the attack to two hotel security guards, but Mr. Angélil was gone when they arrived.

Court documents list Ms. Kwon as an ordained minister in the Full Gospel World church and her husband as an ordained Presbyterian minister.

Las Vegas police Sergeant Chris Darcy said the police report alleges sexual assault, a felony. He said he could not predict how long the investigation by the department's sex-crimes unit would take, but promised it would be "thorough and complete" before the department turns over findings to the Clark County District Attorney.

The police sergeant said detectives could be hampered by the two-year delay in starting work on the case.

"A lot of times, crimes against persons cases hinge on physical evidence like fingerprints, DNA and items at a scene or taken from a scene that can be processed and linked to a perpetrator," he said.

He declined to say whether Ms. Kwon provided physical evidence of the alleged attack.

No hearing date has been set in the civil case.

Imperial Palace General Manager Edward Crispell has not commented on the case.

Ms. Kwon's lawyer, Joseph Hong of Las Vegas, did not respond yesterday to a request for comment.

Celine specifically stated before she "left" that she was taking 2 years off to have a baby, and that's what she did. It wasn't exactly a publicity "stunt" since everything she does she turns into a big public spectacle. That's why even people like you and I, who don't care, know she "left" and has now "come back".

Since all she has to do is pick a few songs and sing them it doesn't take her long to make a record, whereas bands like U2 have to write songs and figure out how to play them and try to put everything into a coherent package etc. It naturally takes more time to do all that and do it well.

Did you see her on Larry King Live last night? She is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Larry King is the perfect place for her to go to promote a new album b/c King does not ask tough questions, he just patronizes his guests to the point of boredom.

Dion didnt even sing, IMO, she lip synced...how original.

Remember the Lovetown Tour when Bono made that speech about "U2 going away for a while, don't know when they'll be back, just dream it all up again". A lot of people speculated about the future of U2. I think that was the only time U2 did take time off that garnered a lot of attention. People thought they would break up or whatever. But people that really knew, knew that U2 only took some time off to record again. They didn't know U2 would change their image and entire sound all together. But during that time off U2 never really vanished from the public eye. Bono was at the 1990 R&R Hall of Fame, he sang with Bono in 1990 at one of his shows, they did the video for night and day etc.

Still that going away speech Bono made was great.

I heard somewhere that Celine & Co. collect songs and force the songwriters to sign over publishing rights - which is where the big money is or she bans them. I also heard that Corey Hart of "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" infamy is one of the songwriters that bowed down to those demands and she has used s couple of his songs.

lol...I've read only a couple of threads today and here's what I've learned: Britney isn't the brightest crayon in the box and Celine isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Yes Diamond that old geezer she's married to is pretty creepy. It's just because he was her svengali manager, didn't Mariah Carey do the same thing? Me I'd just as soon not get it that way, if that's the only way I could have a career I wouldn't want it. I'd rather stay unfamous and have a guy my own age.

About the 'retirement' thing: does anybody remember a few years ago when Sugar Ray Leonard the boxer retired because of his eye, then made a 'comeback' fight, retired again, another 'comeback' again, retire again, until it became ridiculous? It was obvious the only reason he was 'retiring' and 'coming back' was to draw more attention to himself, and avoid having to actually compete and keep his career going in between. I don't know why it took everyone so long to catch on. It was a joke!
