Feb. 7, 2002 -- Who are the greatest rock bands of all time? In its latest edition, Spin Magazine lists its top 50 picks. On Talk of the Nation, host Neal Conan invites NPR listeners to name their top 25.

I don't know if U2 deserve to be that high. Even though they're my favorite band, most of the other groups they had a strong influnce on are crap. I mean, the Alarm, come on. And where's Bob Marley? Or Public Enemy? Another thing I noticed with the list - no female artists. If you're gonna include Elvis and Eric Clapton (neither of whom are a band), then shouldn't you include Madonna. And without the Patti Smith Group REM wouldn't be around. Or the Supremes, they've got some of the most perfect pop songs ever. I guess it is just a list of listeners choices.
