I can't remember ever seeing a thread for this song so I made one. This song is great in every form I have heard it in.

So let's hear it for this overlooked gem of the 90's.

I think the live version is fantastic, the studio version isn't that great though.

never heard the live version

But I love the song!
The "water-effect" and the sound of violins...

And then bono's soft, velvet voice

Great!

What about the Christy Moore version with Bono and Edge? Has anyone heard this?

I love that version! It has a lot of cool elements that should have been incorporated into the studio version. I love the studio version as well though and it has an understated beauty about it.

^Thanks

I love the b-side version. Now I can't wait to hear the live version-

the studio version is for sure one of my 30 favourite U2 songs and my 3rd non-album favourite, after Spanish Eyes and Mercy.

It's just so chilling, when I'm in the right mood there's nothing better than NASOTR

Beautiful Lyrics too.

"North and South of the River"

I wanna reach out over the lough
And feel your hand across the water
Walk with you along an unapproved road
Not looking over my shoulder
I wanna see and I wanna hear
To understand your fears
But we're north and south of the river

I've been doing it wrong all of my life
This holy town has turned me over
A young man running from what he didn't understand
But the wind from the lough just gets colder and colder
There was a badness that had its way
But love wasn't lost
Love will have its day
North and south of the river
North and south of the river

Can we stop playing these old tattoos
Darling, I don't have the answer
I wanna meet you where you are
I don't need you to surrender
'Cause there's no feeling that's so alone
As when the one you're hurting is your own

North and south of the river
North and south of the river
North and south of the river

Some high ground is not worth taking
Some connections are not worth making
There's an old church bell no longer ringing
Some old songs are not worth bringing

North
Higher ground is not worth taking
North and south of the river

I'd completely forgotten about the song until I saw this thread for it. I listened to it a bunch of times last night and remembered how much I used to love the lyrics, especially "I've been doing it wrong all of my life / This holy town has turned me over" and the last verse. I'm putting it on my iPod now.

Omagh version is amazing, wasn't impressed with the studio version when I first heard it and only paid attention after hearing the Omagh one. Incidentally, I haven't listened to the studio since hearing Omagh... maybe I should. :hmm:
