Irish rockers U2 will have a new release in stores by this fall, but it won't be a new studio album.

Sources confirmed to JAM! Music that U2's next release will be a best-of set covering the years 1991 to 2000. The package is tentatively due in stores in October, one source said.

The package would be a follow-up to 1998's "Best Of U2: 1980-90." U2 fan sites have been reporting rumours of the retrospective set for weeks. No track listing has been announced yet, but the u2swisshome.com site reported that the set would be a limited-edition release and would be available in two-disc and single-disc formats.

Last month, U2 announced that a planned European summer tour had been scrubbed in favour of returning to the studio to work on new material. It's possible that those sessions could yield new material to be included on the new best-of.

The U2swisshome.com site said a new single was expected prior to the release of the anthology, and that a second new U2 single was anticipated by early 2003.
