U2
10/24/2001 - New York City

The I.R.A seems to have laid down their weapons. I'm not quite sure what the exact situation is, but I'm hopeful that this is an actual breakthrough and even a potential end to the horrifying violence of the struggle.
Good luck to the people of Northern Ireland. It would be amazing to see a peaceful resolution to the problems.
And in similar news, I went to see U2 again tonight. Boy are they good in concert.
Wowee. They're just amazing. Melodic and powerful. I wish there were more musicians who:
a-Write great songs
b-Are nice people
c-Have a strong social conscience
d-Play all their hits in concert...
In a part of the U2 show they listed some of the people who were killed in the terrorist attacks (they couldn't list all 6,000, cos that would've taken hours).
Seeing the names of some of the people who were killed in the terrorist attacks made me sad but it also made me angry. The victims were individuals. Innocent individuals. The terrorists are wrong. It needs to be said a million times, the terrorists are wrong.
Killing innocent people is a profound wrong, and we can't forget that.
I know that sounds simple, but we can't forget that one basic fact: killing innocent people is wrong.

Ok, so the U2 show was great. 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' had a particular and almost uncanny resonance given the terrorist attacks on the U.S. and Bono is a New Yorker (as well as an Irishman), so it seemed as if the show had special meaning for him.
And now it's 2 a.m and that means it's time to go into my studio and try to get some work done.
Goodnight,
Moby

This thread doesn't deserve to go unnoticed. I am liking moby more and more now and this only makes my thinking more to the point of the truth i am sure it will reach. Moby for Rolling Stone also named ATYCLB as the best album of the last year.

Moby caught a lot of flak for "selling out" unforunately. To me his songs remain the same regardless of the major advertising pimpage. It was also said a few months ago that Moby claimed Achtung Baby to be his all time favorite record. To an artist like Moby, whose songs despite being sold out to advertising agencies the world over (he did it so his songs would get exposure because no radio would play them) Moby does have a lot of musical integrity. I don't care what people say about Moby, I think he's a brilliant musician. To him and his relationship with Achtung Baby, it's more than just a melody. It's about expression and the fact that U2 can deliver such raw emotion so elequently. As a fan of Moby's music, I am tickled pink that Moby aspires to achieve the same musical goals that U2 have... and I admire in him his public appreciation for U2.

Yeah and I think the feeling is reciprocated by the boys too. I adore Play and cant wait for a new one. I need tog et some of his older stuff too. There are quite a few albums out there, didnt even know they existed...

Moby actually named Achtung Baby as his best record of the past 15 years in an interview in Q magazine two months ago.

Now, everybody rock your body

Looking for explanations? Well I don't even understand

you're right rouge, this thread deserves notice.

I've been a fan of Moby since college. The first album of his I bought was "Ambient". Amazing music, amazing artist. I'm glad he's getting the recognition he deserves, and it doesn't surprise me that he gives props to U2 'cause the guy knows good music.

I can't change the world, but I can change the world in me.

I love Moby!! It's great because whenever he talks he makes a lot of sense, he is a really smart guy I think.

Bono actually named Moby the 5th member of U2 at the European MTV awards in Stockholm. Yeah he was joking, but it's still waaay cool!

I really like Moby's music.. and must admit that while I think U2's music is very varied, Moby does so many different kinds of music.. take for instance the Animal Rights album which is half ambient songs and half speed metal!

I really am looking forward to what he does on his next album!

Saying Moby sold out though is very unfair, first off, if you said he sold out then you must say every band sold out the moment they signed to a big corporate label, wait, the moment they actually made their first dollar. People seeing selling your music to corporations as selling out, that is not so, selling out is when you change your music to better fit the musical environment. Moby didn't do that, all he did was realize that music is indeed as a project and that all pieces of art are products as well as pieces of art. And since Moby was getting no radio play, he had no choice but to sell his music to all the corporations to get attention to his music, to get more people to hear his music. If you call Moby a sell out, call every other majoy label a band one as well since their music is basically owned by the music labels who happen to be corporations.

I like Moby.

The only Moby album i've heard besides 'Play' is 'Mobysongs.' It's also very good.

He usually has fairly entertaining messages called 'Moby updates' that are posted almost daily on his website. This one about u2 is one of those. There's one i read a few months back that he posted after doing a photo shoot with Bono and PJ for the cover of Vanity Fair. i think he said Bono was one of the funniest and nicest people he had met.

Here comes the sun . . .

I'll creep out of my grave for a short, but very true story...

If you take it as bragging, I apologize now, but it was an amazing experience which I really havent shared publicly:

Last year, I visited Dublin and the surrounding parts of Ireland along with a few others at the time which had worked on Interference. One of our main points of the trip, besides going to all the U2 locations and seeing the country, was to see the Slane music festival.

The night before we attended Slane, I recieved an email alerting me that what was going to be a doubtfully possible VIP to The Kitchen.. had come through! That evening myself and my companions were to arrive at the club below the hotel, and ask for on of the managers (by name). Well it turns out he wasn't there, but we were passed along to the head of security which informed me that a table was being reserved for us. "Follow him, everything will be taken care of, do you need anything? want anything? Don't worry about leaving your belongings here - this is VIP, etc"... These are all things we were told as we were escorted through the club on sort of a mini-tour, the music bumping, the heat rising, and the drinks following. Unfortunately, we were told, the members of U2 would most likely not be int he club that evening as they were just getting back from a vacation in France (this was right after ATYCLB was actually finished).

Well, we drank, we gawked, we danced, and we met a lot of Irish people named 'paddy' (of course... that wasn't their real names.. ). The club was really cool, an almost Star Wars'ish saloon look to it, and very comfortable.

Well, I suppose you're wondering 'what the hell does this have to do with MOBY?!'... well, it so happens that the two headliners of Slaner were Moby and *gag* Bryan Adams. Both were invited as guests to The Kitchen that evening and would also be in the VIP area. This couldn't have been any more -cool-. Moby was actually invited by one of the club's staff to come meet myself and my friends, he ended up coming over and talking with myself and Crayon (Peter Hanning - for those of you that may have heard of him), we talked with Moby for a bit, he's a very cool, short, down to earth guy. Probably one of the coolest 'celebs' I've actually had the pleasure to have a conversation with, of course 2nd to The Edge. After we were done speaking with Moby, the staffer asked if we'd like Bryan to join us, we kindly refused

The next day, we made the journey to Slane, saw several artists and bands, waited for Moby to come on, and were absolutely amazed. That quiet guy.. was now a wild musical energetic nut... after his performance, we decided not to wait for Bryan Adams to perform

and headed back to Dublin.. a memorable 24 hrs, a memorable trip. Ever since then, I've been a huge Moby fan, and although his earlier recordings are mostly very UNLIKE his last album PLAY, I urge you, if you truly enjoy the roots of electronic music to journey into Moby's history and pickup a couple of his older CDs... they are all VERY unique - some good, some bad, in my opinion.

Well.. hope you enjoyed.

Awesome story Elvis! Moby is definately in my top 5 artists.. often at number 2.

Moby + U2 are true artists and masters of their craft who actually give a damn about the world they live in. There is no cynic in the world that will be able to convince me otherwise.

I love musicians who transcend their role as just entertainers.

Just keep tearing down the walls that hold you inside...

Great story Elvis!

I love Moby too! He's a very intelligent and talented person I think. I love Play and others and I'm waiting for a new album...

I agree, Moby is very cool. I didn't really get into his music till I saw him at Slane 2 though. He was definately the best support act there. And he talked inbetween virtually every song which was cool. At one point he had a camera and asked us all to give him the finger. He said "I want a picture of 80,000 people telling me to fuck off". It was so funny.

Damn, Moby is my soulmate. Who knew.

I also think Moby is a great artist.

I enjoyed it when MTV's cribs show went to Moby's place in NYC. He was showing them around and came to his book shelf and said something to the effect "I've seen this show before and noticed that nobody had any books in their places." Pretty funny observation.

I don't know much about Moby personally, but I love his "Play" CD and definitely intend to increase my Moby CD collection. I've seen some other CDs at a local used CD store. I'll have to go pick them up. His music is different, which is one thing I like about it! As for radio airplay...I first heard him a couple years ago on a local "adult alternative" radio station here. As I realized that several songs I really liked turned out to be by Moby, I got the "Play" CD. Now I find out he likes my favorite band. Not only does he make good music, he has good musical taste!

Cool story, Elvis! I don't know much about Moby or his music, but whenever I see him or read about him in interviews he seems like a really intelligent and nice guy. I'm glad he likes U2!
