Reviews of HTDAAB

Dear all,

This thread will serve as your quick reference guide for all reviews of HTDAAB that we can find. I will update this thread as often as I find/receive new reviews. Feel free to send me anything I miss (including links): carrie@interference.com or PM me. :)

Also, please use this thread as more of a reference and a "here's another link to so-and-so" rather than a discussion of the reviews themselves.

FROM U2 ACHTUNG.COM:
U2achtung.com was likely to be able to attend l'audition of the new album. Initially, there is very good U2 which will arrive on next 22 November with a sound much nearer to period 80 than 90. Find in a few hours the complete review, title by title of this new album.

So, Hot Press gave it a 8.5/10. Is that a good review to anyone who has read it?

Here you go...

It's in Content but you can also find a link on the WTAHAN welcome page.

Thanks! But it's not this one. It was a thread that had the name of all of the producers on each song and that said that Edge did extra percussion on AMAAW and that Larry did backing vocals on MD and stuff.

OK, I have tried listening to this album from start to finish and Im missing what everyone is stroking this album for. I think Miracle Drug, City of Blinding Lights, and Original of the Species are alright, but Im not seeing this as better then ATYCLB. I kept on reading comments about this album being a guitar record and "punk rock on venus" as Bono put. THis seems to be the least Guitar album I have heard from U2 in a long time. Overall grade, C!

Try putting everything out of your mind before listening to it. Forget everything you've heard and thought about the album. Pretend you had no clue the album was even coming out, and you just bought it. Now, grab some headphones, get away from the computer, close your eyes, and focus on nothing but the music.

Press play.

My point is, you're going to have a hard time enjoying the album when you expected something entirely different, even if it is outstanding (which, in my opinion, it is). So, try to clear your mind of those thoughts, and see what happens :)

Least guitar? Please don't speak about things that you are completely unable to hear. This record has an almost stupid amount of guitars on it. As a guitar player I feel very overwhelmed by all of the overdubs. I 'm not sure which guitar to focus on. You... not to be very rude, have no ear what so ever to be saying that it is their record with the least amount of guitar. I shake my head with a slow gate almost laughing outloud at your extreme ignorance and I am seriously wondering why you want U2 to be making punk rock from venus. Are you a fan or not? The real fans of U2 don't place ultimatums. Go away! This is my Ultimatum.

Jacknife Lee had quite a key role then - asp as AMAAW is probably U2s most broad spectrum appealing song ever - and great at that.

The MOJO review was excellent from what I've read on U2.com, another magazine that wasn't always really into U2 from memory.

Another review.....

...from classic rock magazine. And I have to say that the guy puts some interesting points forward and is probably right in some of the things he says. He gives it 3/5 which is not something I agree with, I think it is worthy of a 5/5. But he points out that the last 2 U2 albums are 11 tracks full of songs which could easily be singles. This is one thing U2 never used to do. Their albums used to be not so immediate, and them albums are what become the "Classic Albums".

My point about this is that 4 years ago I, and many other people, thought that when ATYCLB was released it was another masterpiece to rank alongside Achtung baby, but after living with that record for 4 years I can now see that it isn't, while being a good album, it is not one of their best, and definetly nowhere near as good as Pop. Now after hearing this album my initial reaction was that its up there with their best work. But its another album similar to the feeling I had with ATYCLB on first listen. Very easy to get into, very immediate, full of songs that could be singles. While this is good news for the casual U2 fan, I think that in 4 years time I will be saying that this album is nowhere near as good as Achtung Baby and even Pop.

The reviewer also says that U2 used to make albums that didn't have that immediate hook, catchy sound, that their albums took time to grow on you. And I think he is absolutely right. I think that they now make their albums to sell as many as they can in the USA. This album will sell massive around the world, its a decent album but will not in a couple of years rank alonside their best work.

I will attach the review if I can find out how to do it.
