Hi!

I'm making a mix for a friend who generally likes U2 but doesn't know anyhting besides their biggest hits and knows NOTHING from the 90s! *gasp* (other than one & Mysterious Ways)

He likes rock music from the Beatles, to the White Stripes, to the Yeah yeah yeahs, to coldplay....

Anywho, I wanna make him a cd that shows U2's musical rage and shows that they have a lot of great songs besides the singles.

This is what I have so far, and I'm also considering how to list them. By decade? By flow? By sound? Completely Random? By groups that work well live?

The Fly
UTEOTW
Acrobat
ultraviolet
kite
in a little while
Electric co.
stories for boys
OOTS - single version
L&POE
Bullet the blue sky
RTSS
In God's Country
Gloria
October
SATS
Gone
DYFL
TGBHF
ASOH
Wire
Drowning Man
numb
lemon
stay

25 songs, 1.8 hours

I'd like it to fit on 1 cd...

thanks

Well, hits from the 90s are OK becuase he doesn't know anything from the 90s!

He wouldn't know songs like Gloria, Bullet, In god's country, lemon, stay, Staring at the Sun, the Fly, or TGBHF.

So even though those are 'kinda' hits, he wouldn't know them.

Really all he knows are; SBS, NYD, Pride, WOWY, Streets, ISHFWILF, BD, Stuck, Elevation, Vertigo, all because of You.

That's about it.

2 years ago I made a U2 cd for my mom who is 65 and she loves it. It contained a lot of songs from JT and ATYCLB since I felt those were the kind of songs she'd enjoy the most and I also sprinkled in some other hits. I plan on making a second one for her branching out a bit more in AB, War, Boy, Pop and Bomb.

Here is the cd I made for her:

1. Where the Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Havent Found What I'm Looking For
3. With or WIthout You
4. Running To Stand Still
5. Red Hill Mining Town
6. In God's Country
7. Trip Through Your Wires
8. One Tree Hill
9. Pride
10. Even Better Than the Real Thing
11. One
12. Until the End of the World
13. Mysterious Ways
14. Beautiful Day
15. Elevation
16. Walk On
17. Kite
18. New York

As you can see, I left out a lot of the harder edge songs. Next cd I make for her will definately include The Fly, Staring at the Sun, New Years Day, I Will Follow, All I Want Is You, Sunday Bloody Sunday and several songs off of Bomb which I believe are right up her alley. I'm pondering including Discotheque but not sure yet.

My point by showing you this list is that I deliberately included songs I felt she, at 65, could most easily adapt to. She was brought up with the original rock n roll music of the 50's and early 60's pre-Beatles so including Until the End of the World was a little hedgy on my part, but she seems to be okay with it.

I think if you are going to make a U2 cd for someone you have to take into account their current and past musical tastes. Now that I know she likes U2, my mom might be more open to some of the faster and more experimental stuff.

cool mix!

I'm pretty much making my bud the cd to show u2's musical range and great songs he very likely hasn't heard before, and I know what you mean about think about their musical tastes, great point!

Thanx

My suggestions:

Stories for Boys
The Electric Co.
Two Hearts Beat As One
Bad (the version from the 4/15/05 Glendale show is the one I'd choose)
Elvis Presley and America (I'm the only person who'd probably ever put this on a U2 mix, but I think it's a great example of how much they're willing to experiment)
One Tree Hill
a Zoo TV-era live version of BTBS (like the one from the Stay single)
Until the End of the World
a live version of The Fly (I'd suggest either Zoo-era or the recent performance of it in Sao Paulo)
Ultraviolet
Acrobat
Zooropa
Dirty Day (preferably the Bitter Kiss Mix)
Mofo
Gone
Wake Up Dead Man
Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad
Slow Dancing
In A Little While
Kite
Smile
City of Blinding Lights
Crumbs from Your Table
Fast Cars (I especially like the Jacknife Lee Mix)

I put them in chronological order, more or less, but a more interesting version would be to mix them, throwing old songs up against new ones, which is what I love to do when I make U2 mixes (how big of a dork does that make me sound?)

Another cool thing to do might be to make a two-disc mix, one of songs you'd like to turn your friend on to, and one of amazing live versions of songs he/she might already know, drawing from different time periods and showing how the band's performances have evolved.

1) Deep In The Heart
2) Slow Dancing
3) Native Son
4) Fast Cars
5) I'm Not Your Baby (vocal)
6) Night And Day
7) Spanish Eyes
8) Dancing Barefoot
9) Big Girls Are Best
10) Holy Joe (Garage Mix)
11) Two Shots Of Happy, One Shot of Sad
12) Stateless
13) In The Name Of The Father
14) Luminous Times
15) Walk To The Water
16) Boomerang II
17) Alex Descends Into Hell For A Bottle Of Milk
18) Trash Trampoline and the Party Girl
19) Your Blue Room
20) Diry Day (remix)
21) Salome (zooromancer)
22) Where Did It All Go Wrong?

I would love to say "J. Swallo", "Treasure" and "Touch" but I never heard them.

Non-hits, showing U2's musical range...

Lady With The Spinning Head(Extended Dance Mix)
Ultraviolet
Until The End Of The World
The Fly
An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart
Drowning Man
Party Girl(UABRS Version)
Two Shots Of Happy, One Shot Of Sad
Your Blue Room
Elvis Presley And America
The Unforgettable Fire
Kite
So Cruel
October
Van Dieman's Land
Tomorrow
Bullet The Blue Sky
Running To Stand Still
Red Hill Mining Town
Indian Summer Sky
Acrobat
Lemon
Miss Sarajevo
Stay

Zooropa
Discotheque
Mofo
Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
Gone
Love And Peace Or Else
Another Time, Another Place
Twilight
Fire
Exit
Mothers Of The Disappeared
Stateless
If You Wear That Velvet Dress
Please(Popmart Mexico City Version)
One Step Closer
Original Of The Species(Single Version)
One
When I Look At The World
In A Little While
Fast Cars
Seconds
Surrender
Numb
Love Is Blindness

That's basically the kind of running order I'd go with, disc 1 and disc 2. The haphazardness of it all adds to the idea of showcasing U2's versatility and all the different kinds of music they have made.

Nice B-sides CD, but I don't think that's what they are looking for.

The OP specifically said anything from the 90s is fair game because his/her friend doesn't know anything from the 90s.

Really I was just giving you a hard time.

But seriously I wonder how many people who listen to rock/pop music don't know 'One'?

lol, thanks guys, some great ideas so far, i'll keep working at it and post what I come up with...but that will be much later! I'm sooo busy the next few days! AAAAHHAHA!!!!

Well, even tho I overlooked the album songs, the list still exists within the U2 non-hits category.

Anyway, as for albums:

BOY: An Cat Dub, A Day Without Me (technically a single, but who seriously has ever heard this on the radio, in the US at least)

OCTOBER: I Fall Down, I Threw A Brick..., Rejoice, Tommorrow, title track

WAR: Seconds, Drowning Man

TUF: A Sort Of Homecoming, Wire, 4th of July

JT: Running To Stand Still, Red Hill Mining Town, Exit, Mothers

R&H: Hawkmoon, Heartland

AB: Was "Until" a single? If no, then of course. Ultraviolet, Love is Blindness....lotta damn hits off that record

Zooropa: Title track, Daddy's Gonna Pay, Some Days...

POP: Do you feel loved?, Mofo, Gone, If You Wear, Wake up dead man

ATYCLB: In A Little While, When I look at the world, New York

BOMB: Crumbs from your table...sadly that's all i'd recommend
