I'm pretty sure no one needs the four band members to be in the same place when the album is officially announced. It's not like they're going to do a live "breaking news" TV broadcast from the rooftop of the Clarence Hotel to make a simple album announcement.

Your point doesn't make much sense. Any surprise drop of an album is going to be on a day that doesn't correspond with all of the regular release days around the world. Or else that wouldn't be much of surprise.
psssst... we're doing a surprise drop of our album in the UK on Monday, please don't tell the Americans until tomorrow...
Beyoncé didn't surprise drop her album on different days for different countries! She dropped it on midnight December 13th, a Thursday night/Friday morning.
So like I said, Tuesday might just be a coincidence, but it doesn't change the fact that after hearing Lennon say they were filming an Apple promo, that there isn't a chance that they could pull a surprise on the 9th at the Apple event.
Again, not saying it will, just saying that for the band to make a real splash, reach millions of more people, and not come off as a Beyoncé copycat, that it would be a smart move.
and p.s. - I admit I was being a bit America-centric.

seriously, what's with the constant fat jokes with Bono? Granted, I don't pay too close attention to his appearance on a month to month or even yearly basis, so I might have missed a phase in which he was overweight...but I do know that one bad photograph taken at the wrong angle or moment could make one look heavier than they are and create a distorted impression of someone's real appearance.
Anyway, on the topic of the album, I truly hope the single is just the band and not some guest appearance by Adele, Madonna or some other female pop sensation whose image and songs are produced by that four non-blondes chick and the corporate "hits" committee. It would be such a lame, transparent attempt at "relevance" - whatever the hell that means. Do you honestly think if the new album turns out to be the equal of Achtung Baby in terms of artistry that it will have any bearing on commercial success? I think not. The truth is that great songs do not necessarily translate into record sales.

Coldplay and Radiohead are competing against Genesis and Rush at this weekends kabaddi tourny in Nepal.
Thommbe Yorkes versus Fill Collings will be a highlight, although little krissy mertins against Giddy lees will be a one sided affair as Giddy is a bad ass kabbadi mofo.
Or none of that is true and I'm just super stoked about going to Reading and Leeds this weekend. Warpaint and Wolf Alice for me yippee! and arctics and qotsa if times don't clash.

Something to keep in mind that Billboard is going to tally album sales from Tuesday to Monday to determine weekly figures. If you release on Thursday or Friday, you're losing 2-3 days worth.
For someone like Beyonce, it obviously didn't matter or prevent her from getting her album to #1. In U2's case, I wouldn't take any chances.

When I was big and fat, jibes about people being fat kinda annoyed me because I was big and fat too. I'm not big and fat anymore, and when I look back I don't think I ever really was big and fat at all. My memory plays tricks on me these days like two naughty little evil kids toying with an elderly grandparent who wouldn't give them any money for tricks and treats.
Bono is cuddly and short stocky build so is prone to easy weight gain like Messr Fisher.

SO true. She sold 80,000 in the first few hours, and 350k in the first 3 days I believe. U2 would need the whole week to get to these type of numbers.
But - and I don't mean to sound like a broken record - if they had it announced at the Apple event, they would probably breeze to those numbers. The exposure would be fairly unprecedented.

Fat jokes+wild speculation=Interference. What else is there right now? The occasional divergence to Adele, MJB, Genesis, and the brilliance of Elbow? It's either fat jokes and wild speculation or crickets.
I've actually seen other U2 forums comment on the obsession here with the fat jokes, which I thought was a recent phenomenon but apparently has been going on for quite some time. Which, now that I think about it, doesn't surprise me.

I will concede this point. My wild speculation, while making perfect sense in my mind. Could very well be the most ridiculous thing to anyone else.
