I've recently just...

... re-discovered this song. Lately, I just can't seem to stop listening to it. Even though it was written by Cole Porter, Bono sings it with such an awesome sense of longing and passion as if it were his very own...

Quote:
Night and Day

When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the eye of the clock
As it's standing against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the rain drops
When the summer shower's through
So a voice within me
Keeps revealing you...you

Night and day
You are the one
Only you beneath the moon
And under the sun
Whether near to me or far
It's no matter, baby, where you are
I think of you
Night and day

Day and night
Why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffic gloom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
Though such a hungry yearning
Burning inside of me
This torment won't be through
'til you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night
Night and day

Night and day
Under the hide of me
Oh, such a hungry yearning
Burning, burning inside of me
This torment won't be through
'til you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night
Night and day
I really miss it when I don't have it with me...

I was just listening to this song today...it is one of my favorites. I want it to be played at my wedding.

"Hallelujah, Heaven's white rose,
The doors you open...I just can't close..."

U2 really converted this song. If you listen to such masters as Billy Holiday or Frank Sinatra sing this rather famous Cole Porter track, you'll hear it performed almost like a show-tune. It's cute, catchy and you find yourself snapping your fingers as it plays.

But if you really look at those lyrics you'll see a VERY dark, deep song about pure obsession. Bono/U2 recognized this and converted this happy little show tune into this incredibly powerful song about desire and obsession. While it is very dark, this is by far my favorite cover that U2 has done (although Patti Smith's "Dancing Barefoot" is high on that list as well).

Some fans claim that Bono's voice started deteriorating with AB. I point to "Night and Day" as an example of how this is false. "Night and Day" was released late in 1990 - AB was released late in 1991. Unless Bono smoked four cartons of cigarettes a day in that year, there's no way his voice deteriorated that quickly (especially in a year when they weren't touring). Essentially, Bono is simply a good singer, not great. He has his good and bad moments like any good singer. "Night and Day" is clearly an oustanding moment. That said, note how much screaming he does there. I definitely prefer the singing Bono does now.

I couldn't agree with you more. The combination of the lyrics and Bono's anguish and passion in his voice are so unbelievably powerful. I recently used this song to express my feelings to someone because there is no other song that compares to the intense passion expressed by Bono in Night and Day.

When you hear the song, it sounds like he's literally crying out with great despair to the one person he cannot be without.

i agree 100% ... what other songs should u2 do?
i was thinking the doors songs either "the crystal ship" or "wishful sinful" or the sinatra classic "one for my baby another for the road" but that could go with "2 shots of happy"

If I Had a
$1,000,000

If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you a house (I would buy you a house)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you furniture for your house
(Maybe a nice chesterfield or an ottoman)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you a K-Car (a nice Reliant automobile)
If I Had $1000000 I'd buy your love.

If I Had $1000000
I'd build a tree fort in our yard.
If I Had $1000000
You could help, it wouldn't be that hard.
If I Had $1000000
Maybe we could put a refrigerator in there.
(Wouldn't that be fabulous)

If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you a fur coat (but not a real fur coat that's cruel)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you an exotic pet (Like a llama or an emu)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you John Merrick's remains (All them crazy elephant bones)
If I Had $1000000 I'd buy your love

If I Had $1000000
We wouldn't have to walk to the store
If I Had $1000000
We'd take a limousine 'cause it costs more
If I Had $1000000
We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner.
(But we would eat Kraft Dinner. Of course we would, we'd just eat more. And buy really expensive ketchup with it. That's right, all the fanciest Dijon Ketchup. Mmmmmm.)

If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you a green dress (but not a real green dress, that's cruel)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you some art (a Picasso or a Garfunkel)
If I Had $1000000 (If I Had $1000000)
I'd buy you a monkey (haven't you always wanted a monkey?)
If I Had $1000000 I'd buy your love

If I Had $1000000, If I Had $1000000
If I Had $1000000, If I Had $1000000
I'd be rich.

Ahhh, i remember hearing a bit of this song years ago on a U2 TV show. And then later, hearing it on the burned CD i got from Acr@bat.

One of the most pleasant surprises when it comes to U2 IMO... the melody is just haunting, and Bono sounds great. Sort of like a bridge between the 80's and 90's Bono here, i think.

I just love the part at about 3:47 where he goes "night and daaaaay" - that falsetto is too beautiful.

It is a very romantic song indeed. I especially love the steel string remix.
