TV can be a big monster or a big help, you just gotta know how to use it. People have to set the rules and learn how to live with them. Granted it's easier to fall closer to the bad side when you're filled with crap 24/7 in some stations and TV being so addictive but nobody is putting a gun on your head and making you watch it. Of course when you raise your kids in front of the TV it’s only normal to have the effects of it after some time. Some stuff on TV is so stupid and wrong and obviously done just to get your attention not to give you anything just take something but yet people watch it even knowing it’s bullshit and absurd. I never understood that. I don't want to be bullshited.

"Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"

Bruce Springsteen - 57 Channels (And Nothing On)

Hey JoyfulGirl....your username isn't an Ani Difranco reference is it?!

I dig Ani and that song but it's actually unrelated, although I don't mind if people think it is.

I can guess where yours came from, too!

i just loved that song as an opener for concerts....
and btw, Edge,....thanks for the happy birthday.....and tell Bono that I love his hugs.....

Who was that guy that sung the Zoo TV intro anyway?

The above quoted piece? It's Disposable Heroes of Hiphopracy. Michael Franti's group pre-Spearhead. Recognise the voice now?

I LOVE Franti/Spearhead.

I LOVE Franti/Spearhead.

I didn't know the Franti connection!

Well I may have known it, but forgotten it.

Let me just say that Hiphoprisy is the coolest made up word ever (while subtly correcting the spelling ;) )

I'm going to be in a room with Noam Chomsky soon. :hyper:

He spoke at my uni the year before I got there. So first year was all upper students being all "oooh i bumped into him accidentally at the hors d'ouvres table!" and related ways of rubbing it in.

I agree Edge!

This is very similar to the common day personal computer addiction, lol! *guilty*

Are you preposing any ideas about having the computer intaeract with the upcomming tour in anyway, or are you just providing some food for thought? Either way, it is much appreciated, lol!

I thought it would be great to see the band enter to a huge screen with a countdown to when the concert begins, ala www.htdaab.com.

the countdown hits 0:00:00:00 and sirens go off, then BOOM, explosion sound, crazy lights go off, and smoke fills the stage area, (whihc i foresea as a model of a ruined city via Atomic bomb)

The band sneaks on through the fog and rips into Vertigo!!!!!

am I close??? LOL!!!!

Lucky you ..Chomsky is a good speaker
he is great..as is Klein I read alot of their stuff

"What are the pros and cons of the information age? We should be modest about it. The major advances in speed of communication and ability to interact took place more than a century ago. The shift from sailing ships to telegraph was far more radical than that from telephone to email! The internet could be a very positive step towards education, organisation and participation in a meaningful society. But if you look at the latest figures for internet use, things such as pornography and e-shopping overwhelm everything else" and..
"I suspect that extending that form of abstract and remote relationship, instead of direct, personal contact, is going to have unpleasant effects on what people are like. It will diminish their humanity. I think."
Chomsky

I hope that was a cut & paste. I would hate the thought of typing all that out.….

In all seriousness though, I wonder if this 52nd post was more about what’s been going on in Interland lately, than anything else.

That's kind of how I read the "We now interrupt our regularly scheduled programming" thread title and the contents that follow.

Central Amerika... is that how it's spelled there? Cause that Amerika looks way cooler then this America lol. It looks like a punk spelling of America lol... groovy!

Those words definitely bring back memories. One of the best memories of Zoo TV was the George Bush sr. we will rock you rap

"ladies and gentlemen the president of the united states"

A clip of Bush Sr. comes on the screen. Edited together are actual clips of him to the music of We will rock you...

"We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you
some may ask why rock out now
the answer is clear
these are the times of rock and soul
I instructed our military commanders to totally rock Baghdad
Now repeat this here tonight
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you....."

might not be possible depending on what happens in November, but it would be great to see a Bush jr. 'we will rock you' rap on the next tour. Funny thing is, the words make just as much sense now if not more.

I think the internet is different as it supplies a two way communication. You can't talk back to your TV. (Well I guess technically you can, but no one is going to listen). On the internet you can read forums like these and hear what others think and feel. Sometimes it can feel like sitting around with a group of people sharing. TV's can't bring together people like that.

Excellent idea Edge! Very appropriate for our times – if not more so. U2 could alter the lyrics a little to include the internet and satellite TV? (Bloggers are now covering the Democratic and Republican Conventions and they themselves are being covered by the mainstream media! Let’s not forget the atrocious fad called “Reality TV”) Maybe a Remix version (aka Pop Muzik) of Drug Of A Nation? Maybe Bono taking the lead vocals or doing duet with Michael Franti? How about contacting the Emergency Broadcast and having them come up with another type of “We Will Rock Baghdad.” One that is relevant to the new Tour. Though Bono may not want George W. directly used : - ) After all we are living in an age / in a state of vertigo (political / cultural / etc.) If there be comparisons to the ZOOTV Tour – so be it! I am sure that the new Tour will have its own uniqueness and literally blow all other tours out the water. And besides I imagine there will already be a correlation between Achtung Baby and Atomic Bomb – as well as both being spectacular albums!

Wow.

I honestly can not process even a Single thought or word other than Wow after reading that.
I'm still a bit of a baby fan considering that I've only been discovering the band since the beginning of PopMart.

Do you have a time machine I could borrow Edge? I'd love a chance to go back and be @ the Zoo tour...
*laughs* I was definitly born in the wrong year
blast you 79!

*goes back to read Edge's post again..and again*

My mind is still going about the ruined city stage idea...

In light of Edge's post and the whole concept of the tour for ZooTV....wouldn't a great set be the depiction of the ZooTV set in ruins? A set showing a deserted wasteland of TVs and whatnot that were left for the next 'high' that society could cleave itself to.

I have thought of HTTDAB as an expression of breaking away from destructive and vapid distractions/vices and a return to where we all once belonged...a setup like that would be sweet. I'm sure I'm overthinking things but hey, that's the way I'm wired.

Edge,
please tell the band that this next tour has to really send a message.

There are people getting killed everyday in Iraq, Genocide in The Sudan, Terrorists on the loose, people in the U.S. are dangerously close to losing their privacy because of the Patriot Act, a current president that is poisoning the earth and force feeding god and jesus to the american people....

PLEASE make this tour be more than just the music....make it more...please....I don't care how you package it, or how it sounds, this is the eye of the hurricane, many bad things are on the horizon please use this tour as a megaphone for those who barely are a whisper in this world of static and chaos.

thanks
