Isn't Bono worth over 500million$?? I think he has something stuck up his arse. As a hardcore Elvis Presly fan (Elvis gave money to charities out of generosity--no tax reductions) Bono should do the same. I'm sure some poor African country will appreciate a cool 300 million dollars cash.

According to Marx, communism = utopia, in theory anyway. So of course it hasn't happened. If it had... I'd be there.

I didn't say socialism = communism, don't assume I did.

No one in the entertainment industry who lives full time in Ireland pays income tax ...neither do writers, painters or sculptors. Don't pick on U2 when they are just taking the artist's exemption they are entitled to under Irish tax laws. Anyone would. Yes, Bono is richer than rich but why are we assuming he gives nothing to charity?

Entitled to?
He seems to be awfully willing to give away the money of others, perhaps he's like to set the example?

Perhaps my point about him paying no taxes were that unlike most of us, he has a tad bit more to spare.

I see people on the streets, I see people begging for food, I see people destined for the ghetto, and possibly an early grave. I see these people right here in the US of A.

Yes, I am American.

Everything You Know Is Wrong
This is the general discussion area, primarily to be used for reactions and thoughts about U2.

Free Your Mind
This is an off-topic forum. Discuss politics, spirituality, religion, world events.

This thread is about thoughts and reactions to Bono's pet projects. This isn't an OFF-TOPIC. It's very much 'on'.

@ this thread!!!

okay, this thread is worth all the eye-rolling, just to have read Bono's speech from Love Rocks -- THANKS, follower! I hadn't seen it yet.

Anyway, I just wanted to add... capitalism, socialism, whatever ISMs -- People, community, preceded them all. Systems exist to serve the people -- people are NOT meant to "serve" (or suffer under) a system!!
Somewhere in this debate is the vague and offensive implication that some people are meant to go hungry, some not -- that's just how the SYSTEM works... well then, the SYSTEM is fucked, right? If the arrangement doesn't exist to keep everyone warm and fed, then let's rearrange things, shall we? Let's try what hasn't been tried yet... This is the only "manifesto" I've inferred from Bono, simply that what we're doing isn't working, so let's try something new. And I'll follow that line happily...

Well truecolors put it very nicely into words.

I did want to point out to you that you mentioned how condoms are available free to 3rd world countries but that people don't use them cause their uneducated. Am I wrong here or you very subtly indicating that you might after all agree with Bono? Because if I remember correctly doesn't a lot of the money go towards education? And didn't Bono say in his Harvard speech something about how 1 year after a country (can't recall name) got debt relief 3x's more children attend school? Wouldn't this then favor your stance?

Oh well, and no I do not blindly follow Bono's ass. I am from a so called 3rd world country, and I think this is a reasonable request, not perfect but definitely the best idea so so far.

Oh and as far as Bono donating his own cash. I would just like to say that just because we don't hear about it doesn't mean he doesn't. Yes the man has a huge ego but bragging about charitable donations is just wrong in my book. I personally cringe when I see celebreties in the news about donations I'd rather they spread the cause than donate money, wich is ultimately a tax write off, yet I don't see people saying anything about their false motives. In any case I do remember something about Bono and Ali donating the money they got from sueing a tabloid for those pictures they printed of his ass (funny we're talking about his ass here too) to a charity. Name and amount were undisclosed.

So yeah that's it for me...I think you're having too much fun anyways.

Sure it would be a good example... if Bono was somehow an entire government. Poverty can't and won't be solved by the rich individuals's private donations.

It's sad, but so many donations are misused and misappropriated and hijacked along the way too. Most donations never reach their real intended place.

Money alone cannot help, we need people, 'stuff' and action. The problem is too deep.

I think in this case, it's much more effective not knowing exactly who I am, or what my views ACTUALLY are.

I don't really care who you are. You could say you are someone more well-known (like Elvis or Salome or Sicy, etc.) and it still wouldn't matter to me. I haven't met any of those people, so they are just a name to me.

What I *am* interested in hearing, though, are your views. If you want to have a true discussion about this topic, then FULLY disclose your views. Don't accuse us of "blindly following Bono" when you haven't fully expressed why it is wrong to even consider Bono's ideas. Also, please don't generalize. Many of us have done our homework and support Bono and the Debt Relief program. If you want people to talk in an educated manner why this program is valid, then you should also be willing to discuss why it is not.

But since you wish to refrain from a proper discussion (and worse, choose to hide behind a new sobriquet), I see no reason why any of us should state why we support Bono.

This thread is a lame attempt to prove a point:
look at me I question everything, I don't follow blindly, bla bla bla

I'm not living

Did Bono and Gates ever ponder the notion of what will become of the 16 million people in Africa they claim die every year if they save all of their lives? Are they prepared to deal with what they will need? Where will they live, eat, work etc. What wars will they start. How many more already scarce resources will they need and use? It is a tragic thing but it is called survival of the fittest and it is nature. It happens with all species, the winnowing out of the weak for the benefit of the survival of the strongest. It happens with humans too ever think of that? Ok so this sounds shitty but think about it. Remember what Scrooge said about if they are gonna die they had better do it and decrease the excess population? Sorry but maybe that is what nature intended and messing with it will only open new cans of worms.

Anti-Bono have you ever wished Bono would just put his money where his mouth is? Bill Gates did but he still won't shut up. This country is trillions of bucks in debt and I say relieve OUR fucking debt here before we worry about any other country. If that pisses Bono off he should cough up some of his own hundred million pound fortune. He could live plenty well with about 10 million and still leave some for his kids. Sometimes I think he's only trying to earn himself a Nobel prize and a place in the history books or something. I can't believe he really sits around all depressed about sick kids in other countries. He could also do well to use his stash to help the poor at home in Ireland and solve some of the problems they got over there.

Anti Bono and ODB its clear neither of you know anything about what Bono does with his money privately. Bill Gates blows his own horn because he's an unrepentant greedy capitalist who has to let people know what he gives so he can balance public opinion what with all the hype surrounding Microsoft's anti-trust case.

Bono, on the other hand, is probably just following the bible he believes in when it says to do your good deeds in private. I bet Bono and all the boys have given plenty of money to worthy causes, they just don't believe in bragging about it.

Besides, helping these people is not the easy way out, its the more difficult way. Far easier would be to ignore the problem and wish it would go away. I'd rather follow Bono in his climb up the socially responsible mountain than you and your type over the cliff of capitalistic selfishness.

Bono rocks. You don't. Don't be immaturely jealous of something you will never in a million years attain.

I never said it was wrong or right. I simply raised a few questions.

What my views are don't matter for the sake of intelligent conversation. Defining a 'side' would only give someone else a position on which to attack me... that serves no purpose here, as this isn't about me.

I'm still waiting to hear someone explain Bono's overall plan. (thats one of the questions being raised - ding ding ding ding)

Excellent point, Like O2. I hadn't considered that before.

It's not survival of the fittest. You need to acquaint yourself with the history of these places before you speculate in such a broad and troubling way.

Wait. So in your very first thread in this post, when you said you'd like to see Bono's manifesto, you meant you want someone here to give it to you? I'm not doin' the work for that chump! Let him write his own own manifesto.
Seriously, do you really think someone can just explain Bono's overall plan? I certainly don't know what it is. I guess I'm not that concerned at this point either. If Bono were president, or prime minister, I might want to look at his bigger picture. But in his situation, I'm happy to evaluate what he says, and agree or disagree on individual issues/statements. I agree that I should support debt relief for the poorest countries in the world. I don't agree that I should support Greepeace.

But more importantly, what in tarnation were you trying to say about RC Cola?? You totally lost me there. Yes I've heard of Royal Crown Cola. Yes I've heard of unfair trade. Can you help me understand what that was about?

Okay, lets just leave everything in this f**ked up world just the way it is. Everyone worry about their own asses and just let the poor countries burn themselves out, then we don't have to worry about it. Why don't we just go over and kill them all so we don't have to wait for "nature" to do it.

And why are we persisting in this belief that Bono gives nothing but asks everyone else to give generously?

Yes, when your own government offers you a legal tax exemption, you are entitled to take it. When you bring millions of dollars to your country's economy and they offer you a credit for doing so, yes, you are entitled to take it. The Irish government provides this exemption to all it's artists, not just Bono and U2.

And please explain this persistent belief that Bono is sitting on his pile of money like King Midas and not coughing any up for those less fortunate.

I'm sorry but our own governement is responsible for the ghettos and starving people of the USA. That has nothing to do wiht Bono's Irish tax exemption.

And I too, am American.
