Let's say you've been tasked with putting together 2 hours of live U2 recordings that represented not only the best songs but the best performances of those songs. They could be from any live performance--tours, television, radio, etc.

To be eligible the recording would have to be soundboard quality or very good audience.

Let's start with "Out of Control." On what performance does the band really shine most?

Wow that is a great album

But I'd add Desire from Dublin Zoo TV  along with the Desire that you put up..

I just don't like the riff changing on Slane, it's better regular.

It was amazing on the October and War Tours. The only problem with Gateshead is the mic malfunction, which is good on video but not on CD. Red Rocks was also great.

Hola amigos

Well, first of all, it's impossible to fit 20 live songs on one disc  usually they should be (considering they performed normally larger versions than studio tracks) no more than 15 per disc.

Here's my list. It contains at least one song per tour, since Boy days to Vertigo

Disc One:

1- 11 O'Clock Tick Tock (Belfast 81)
2- Twilight (Loreley 83)
3- I Will Follow (Hattem 82)
4- Out Of Control (Red Rocks 83)
5- Cry/The Electric Co (Dortmund 84)
6- Sunday Bloody Sunday (Loreley 83)
7- A Sort Of Homecoming (London 84)
8- October (Dortmund 84)
9- New Year's Day (Dortmund 84)
10-Even Better Than The Real Thing (Dublin 93)
11-Mysterious Ways (Dublin 93)
12-One (Modena 95)
13-I still Haven't Found (Chicago 87)
14-One Tree Hill (Dublin 89 dedicated to Axver  )
15-Bad (Birmingham 84)

Disc Two:

1- Pop Musik/ Mofo (European Music Awards)
2- Bullet The Blue Sky (Tempe 87)
3- Running To Stand Still (Rotterdam 90)
4- Desire (Dublin 89)
5- Please (Rotterdam 97)
6- Where The Streets Have No Name (Christchurch 89)
7- Discotheque/Staring At The Sun (Miami 01)

11-A Celebration (Hattem 82)
12-Angel Of Harlem (Rotterdam 90)

OK, the Slanes have it on Out of Control. Actually, I hate to admit this, but I haven't heard that version (only seen/heard parts of the Slane show, which sounds awesome). I'll have to buy the DVD and check it out (they didn't release individual tracks from that show on iTunes, other than Beautiful Day, did they?)

I have heard at least one performance of Out of Control from the Elevation tour and it was absolutely fantastic. It was great on the War tour as well (I saw them play it in Cleveland that spring), but I think they got better as a band over the years.

They started to play a very rousing rendition one night I saw Vertigo Boston (May 26) but it got cut short (Edge was about to launch into the solo and Larry took it down a few notches and they went right into the bridge--I couldn't see who pulled back on the reins there but I'm guessing it was Larry, probably feared Edge would self-destruct on the solo and they'd totally lose it--Edge ended up doing some very tasty improv. at that point which sounded unbelievably sweet, a great spontaneous U2 moment).

OK, next song: "Until the End of the World." Best version? This is going to be a tough one--I would say Zooropa Dublin would be right up there. Then again I thought Larry gave it a little extra punch on the Vertigo tour, so maybe one of those shows?

ooc - slane,nothing beats it

Slane Castle version is one of their very worst. Pathetic, pitiful, really :reject: You can really notice how old they are to play that number :(

80s versions of this classic put Slane Castle onto shame, really

Slane changed the riff, as I said, which is its problem. Best version I'd say, like Ponkine, is Red Rocks 83.

Ponkine, BTBS would be better from ZooTV with Edge's much improved solo, wouldn't it?

I'd make it (no gigs, just tours)

2- Twilight (Boy)
3- I Will Follow (October)
4- An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart (October)
5- Cry/The Electric Co. (Boy)

7- Fire (October)
8- Sunday Bloody Sunday (Live Aid)
9- New Year's Day (Unforgettable Fire)
10- "40" (Unforgettable Fire)
11- Pride (Unforgettable Fire)
12- Unforgettable Fire (Joshua Tree)
13- Bad (Joshua Tree)

Until the End of the World Vertigo rules with the new drumming. It's my favorite song, and the Sao Paulo performance is my favorite.

I've got the Ultimate thing that would piss every U2 fan off:
Following in the footsteps of Pink Floyd's 1995 live album, Pulse, I would take all of their best live versions of their best songs and make it sound like one concert.
Simple as that.

That's not a bad idea, as long as it actually sounds like one show. So many potentially great live albums suffer from not offering the continuity of one performance (I'm thinking particularly of Wilco's recent Kicking Television, which pales in comparison to their live shows that I have).

I’m working on a ‘little’ project to create a concert like that myself. Not just by collecting the best versions and songs, but I want to let it flow like a real concert with nice transitions, so I’m busy mixing the songs. I will gladly post the result when it’s finished. Here is my not-yet-definitive selection for the ultimate U2 concert ever:

00 Intro – Sgt. Peppers / All You Need Is Love (2001-10-10 South Bend)
01 Beautiful Day (2001-10-10 South Bend)
02 The Cry / The Electric Co. (1985-03-21 Chicago)
03 Until The End Of The World (1993-08-28 Dublin)
04 Mysterious Ways (1992-10-14 Houston)
05 Gloria (1989-12-26 Dublin)
06 Sunday Bloody Sunday (2001-05-03 Cleveland)
07 Please (1997-09-04 New York – MTV VMA)
08 City Of Blinding Lights (2005-09-21 Chicago)
09 One (1992-04-21 Tacoma)
10 Stay (Faraway, So Close!) (1993-08-28 Dublin)
11 All I Want Is You (1990-01-09 Rotterdam)
12 Kite (2001-05-03 Cleveland)
13 Sweetest Thing (2001-05-25 Toronto)
14 One Tree Hill (1989-12-26 Dublin)
15 Where The Streets Have No Name (2001-05-03 Cleveland)
16 Walk On (2001-12-24 Miami)
encore:
17 Out Of Control (2001-08-01 Arnhem)
18 Running To Stand Still (1993-08-28 Dublin)
19 The Fly (2006-02-20 Sao Paulo)
20 Bad (1990-01-10 Rotterdam)
21 Ultraviolet (Light My Way) (1993-08-28 Dublin)
22 With Or Without You (1992-08-16 Washington)
23 Yahweh (2005-05-12 Chicago)
24 "40" (1987-04-29 Chicago)

As for Out of Control, I just  that song, but I did not yet found the definin g version of it. Arnhem 2001 comes close to me, but the quality is not the best. Slane and RedRocks are both very good.
For Until The End Of The World, I like the Zoo TV Dublin the most. It sounds fresh and just rocks!

Glad I was able to help. Pink Floyd did a great job of making it sound like it was all one show. But, that was Pink Floyd. Not only that, it was David Gilmour's Pink Floyd and Roger Waters was long gone. I don't think Waters would've liked Gilmour's live album.
Also, if U2 did something like that, the amount of bitching and complaining would be intolerable. I think most folks would clamor for just one live show. But, anything is possible. Pearl Jam pieced together a live album from different shows(Live on Two Legs) and it sounded great.

you cant please everyone. just like with the setlist id hate to be the band when theyre coming up with the setlists during the tour. also im having a hard time deciding wether to make just the 10 disc compilation mix live and studio or just do 8 studio and 2 live, any suggestions of what i should do?

Make it all live. Go for it!

And Go For It I shall!!

one more question for right now.

should i make it career spanning or try and make it like one concert? if i make it one concert i would for the most part only be able to use shows from elevation and vertigo tours because of bonos voice changing so much? or do you think that wouldnt matter?
