Their website is the funniest and the most overt attempt to get U2's attention (and your name on their petition) that I have ever seen.

Cape Town - U2's Bono has definitely made his voice heard to give
Africa a helping hand.

Now a group of fans want Bono and his bandmates to do one more
thing... Jet over to South Africa and make some music.

Sven ten Bokkel Huinink and a few other fans - web designer Bernard
Fourie and David Rozovsky who offered the server on which the site is
run - decided to set up a website to get "those four Irish oakies" here.

Sven, a Dutch fan who has been living in South Africa for the past
seven years, told News24 he has seen two of U2's concerts and that
once you've seen one, you're hooked for life.

So why chose to build a website? "Well, calling Bono is a bit
difficult. Asking Madiba is no option either (the old man deserves his
time and rest). So what was the only option other than pitching up in
Dublin with a bag full of Euros?

"I guess a sign from their fans showing how much we want them to come
over. So that is why we made a 'virtual' petition," Sven added.

The website has been up and running since Wednesday morning and the
response so far has apparently been positive, but if you want to add
your voice - surf over to www.wewantu2.co.za and sign your name.

# U2 last performed in South Africa in March 1998 when they concluded
their world-wide PopMart tour in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Thanks, everyone, for supporting our U2 friends in SA.

After a lot of prompting from all of us, U2 will now tour Australia and parts of Asia plus at least Brasil next year - so why not SA?

I think it would be an EXCELLENT way to end the Vertigo tour - in Africa.

An update from Bono (not THAT Bono):

A note from Bono van der Westhuizen.

Dear all,

"We are over the moon" were the first words blurted out by the men who
put up the website you all registered to. In four days more than
15.000 people visited the website. More than 1700 registered. We were
for three days in a row the number one search result in Google News
about U2. "This is awesome!!".

Okay, back to reality. There are rumours that the oakies from Ireland
(their management) are looking at venues in Australia and New Zealand
so I assume that they may look at us as well?!

To help them look at us I would like to ask you to find three
friends/mates/ex-lovers/you name it who would love to see them perform
in SA. Have those three register their name. That should bring us
another six thousand names plus the two thousand we will have by than
should make it something of interest to U2's management.

Once we have that amount of names on the website registered we will
make sure that the right people will know about us and what we have
done/achieved.

So use that grey mass you have, find three or more friends and make
sure they plunk their names on to the website. That wasn't that hard,
was it?

Will keep you posted once we have some news.

PS If your sister (brother, father, mum, lover, neighbour..) is a DJ
(journo) at a local radiostation (tabloid, newspaper, TV station....),
ask her (him) to mention us. Threaten them with anything you have if
don't help you (us), if they do good karma will flow to them from all
of us.... Get the picture!
