If the Fab Four MkII never met but went on to be involved in seperate bands in their current specialist areas, which, if any do u think may have been sucsessfull.
Or do you think that its a complete one off and they could only work as u2?

Great question...Would Adam and Bono made it in the music business w/o Edge and Larry? I think that U2 as a cohesive group is all powerful and that solo each is fairly anonymous without the rest. Bono is obviously in another dimension these days, but it wasn't that way when they started.

Tough question to answer.

Only The Edge would have a chance I'd say. Adam didn't even know how to play bass, he just knew the word "gig."

I think Bono would've ended up a successful front man for a band no matter what. He brings the lyrics and the vocals to the table. Maybe he wouldn't have found a guitarist as great as The Edge to work with, but I think he would have done just fine for himself.

Sorry this is off-topic, but nice avatar. Did you watch the game last night? I was scared Utley's streak was going to get taken away from him.

It's a good avatar for me because:

- I'm a Philly Fan, hence the name.
- Utley's my favorite player - love the hustle.
- I look like him when my hair is his length.

And of course I watched the game. It was a close one. I've done baseball scorekeeping as a job for a long time now, and it was definitely a hit. The scorekeeper cited the correct rule.

Edge and Bono would be a success.

Adam is a good bass player but in the beginning he had a lot of struggles. I've always felt if i had to pick a weak link to the band, it was larry.

I thought the Edge was an alien octopus genius inside a delicious candy-coated shell?

Well he was, but the shell was a bit too shiny for Bono to handle...and well, now he's no longer candy-coated.

Shouldn't we be in PLEBA?

Kittens I think.

Well, it's an intresting question....In my opinion, they wouldn't have made such an amazing career (GREAT SONGS, VIDEOCLIPS, AMAZING CONCERTS) and success if they wouldn't played together in a rock-band. The basis of making such a great career is that they have been not only good collegues as musicians, but they have been very good, and true friends since 1976.They can trust each others, they can count on each others...This year, in October U2'll be turning 30 year's old!! It's fantastic, I don't know any other rockbands (except for Rolling Stones but I don't like them) who have been playing and working together such a long time.

U2 are a special "family" and they are gifted with lots of talent, blessings, humour!! I can't possibly imagine my life without their fabolous music! God Bless Them forever!!

It's all relative to the first break.
There are many great guitarists, vocalists, and drummers who were in bands, or maybe never in bands who either didn't have the ambition or had the ambition and didn't get the break.

To say that any of U2 would have made it outside of U2 is optimistic at best but we surely don't know. The odds would be far, far stacked against them.

In fact you could say the same about most famous musicians, outside of the freak of nature like Hendrix, most the rest of them are a dime a dozen, either fortunate enough to find the right chemistry, string together a couple of hits and amass a fanbase
or they rode on the coattails of someone with undeniable talent (Ringo, for example).

I think people tend to buy into a mythology about bands, that they are destined to come together and take their music to the masses, maybe it's true in some cases, U2 has a strong case, but mostly it's just a manner of opportunity meeting luck and talent.

Point is, if Edge doesn't get the break early, he probably figures he needs to get a job to pay the bills and never develops his mastery of the delay effect, who is to say he'd ever even consider joining a band again much less hit it big. Same with all the rest.
Bono, had a great voice, a very raw voice, but a great voice, he may have had a chance. But what if he's in a band with a crap guitarist? If he gets to 25 and hasn't hit it big, then he might not ever travel to Africa, might not have ever been as politically inclined as we became. He might have been a full blown religous man.

The window of opportunity is so small, I'd say none of them.

Could you Imagine running into Edge as the manager of the local A & P? (A Canadian grocer, in case its not a common reference)

It's hard to imagine...
