Maybe if he would have used a Gibson Explorer like the Edge it would look cool, but these big cluncky guitars Bono uses look out of place in a fast rock song.

Definitely! And Bono didn't even use a pick. If you want to capture the "bite" of the guitar riff, you have to use a pick and a different guitar.

Apparently, that's what I've heard, that when Bono picks up a guitar in a gig and you don't hear it, it's because he practices the riffs of the song, esp. in the old days. In the 'Under A Blood Red Sky' video, he picks up a guitar in 'A Day Without Me' and you don't hear it. Bono is practicing his riffs (some riffs, cos he dosen't seem to even play it at all).

In 'With or Without You' in Rattle & Hum, you can hear a little bit, but he's getting on with the beat. The first real Bono playing I've heard is 'Stay' in Zoo TV from Sydney. Then we got 'Staring At The Sun' in PopMart and in Elevation Video, you really hear Bono's guitar in every tune he picks up, except 'I WIll Follow'. I guess he really practiced with Edge between the PopMart and Elevation Tours.
