The Morning After. Ranking: Troll of Interference.
Inspired by the Survivor thread, I went off and mathematically determined what my favourite U2 albums were, so I could finally settle. I've never been able to decide, but based purely on track quality, I have found an order, and it seems to look good to me.

1. Achtung, Baby! - Due to pure consistent quality..
2. The Unforgettable Fire - JUST behind AB, and I think as a pure album, it is the best. But EP&A and 4th of July let it down (only slightly).
3. The Joshua Tree - Some classics, TTYW and IGC dropped it back.
4. Pop - Consistently good rather than consistently classic.
5. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - Very good album, I think I have now settled on it. Sometimes and OOTS are the only two tracks which stand up against the greatest U2 tracks of all time and succeed.
6. Rattle And Hum (Studio Tracks) - I didn't count the live tracks. And the 9 original songs on this album were very good in their own right, but the style of the time isn't as much to my taste as the aforementioned albums.
7. Zooropa - Sonic energy. Fantastic considering it could've been little more than a tour album.
8. October - Best of the early days for sure. Gloria, the title track...
8. All That You Can't Leave Behind - Dead heat with October, but should have been so much more considering the 18 years the band had since the former to develop better music.
10. Boy - Great album, but just doesn't have the legs of the others.
11. War - Actually tied with Boy due to the high scores SBS, NYD & 40 got. but the fact that I dislike the album as a whole and some tracks are utter poo, gets ranked below, and last.

Quite enjoyed that, a good way to spend an hour. All I did was rank each song 1 to 5, and ranked the overall album. Then averaged the track scores and used the album rating as a tie breaker. I certainly think it reflects what I feel.

Anyway, I don't care if you do it the way I do or just freestyle, and I realise it isn't original, but post yourorder of U2 albums from favourite to least favourite!

I have used the grades 1-6 which means that an average U2 song will have the grade 3.5. It is still changing but at the moment my album ranking-list is:

1. Achtung Baby 4.7
2. HTDAAB 4.3
3. Joshua Tree 3.6
4. Unforgettable Fire 3.5
5. Boy 3.5
6. October 3.5
7. War 3.4
8. Pop 3.3
9. Rattle and Hum 3.1
10. Zooropa 2.6
11. ATYCLB 2.6

-Stand alone/Currently Unrankable- 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb'. Just hasn't been long enough for me...though it would most likely go top three/four.

1. Achtung Baby
2. The Joshua Tree
3. Zooropa
4. Unforgettable Fire
5. Boy/October
7. All That You Can't Leave Behind
8. War/Pop/Rattle and Hum

I'm sorry, I haven't been able to put the last three in any order...but to me they are the kind of albums everyone has where they listen to them a few times once in a while, then just leave for ages...

I feel this is simply because you just have to be in the right mood for them [not the three albums in question for you lot, whatever album you see in such a light] as there just isn't enough on there to make it last long in your mind after listening like anyone's top three...!

I did the same:

1. The Joshua Tree - 4.4
2. Rattle and Hum (studio) - 4.3
3. ATYCLB - 4.27
4. Achtung Baby - 4.25
5. War - 4.2
6. Pop - 4.17
7. HTD2AB - 3.9
8. Zooropa - 3.81
9. The Unforgettable Fire - 3.8
10. Boy - 3.78
11. October - 3.64

Everything turned out to be pretty close together, but it still is how i would have ranked them anyways. The system works!

1. The Joshua Tree (one of the best albums of all time, from any artist)
2. (tie) Achtung Baby & The Unforgettable Fire
4. Rattle and Hum
5. Boy
6. War
7. ATYCLB

Judging from other postings here and on another board I read, I am going to have to spend some quality time with Pop. I just don't see where such high regard comes from, among fans, for that album.
