Chuck D, Bono "Stand Up"
Politically minded musicians to appear in new documentary

Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Michael Stipe, Peter Gabriel and Bob Geldof will appear in Get Up, Stand Up: The Story of Pop and Protest, a documentary about the history of protest music, to air September 28th on PBS.
Produced and directed by the team of Hannes Rossacher and Rudi Dolezal -- whose previous work includes documentaries about Miles Davis, Freddie Mercury, Quincy Jones and Billy Joel -- the film recounts the origins of protest songs in American labor unions and how musicians ranging from Bob Dylan to Sly Stone to the MC5 put political issues front and center for a generation of listeners.

Named for the Bob Marley song, Get Up, Stand Up is narrated by politically minded rapper Chuck D. The Public Enemy frontman grew up listening to protest music, and later used it as inspiration for his own work.

"'Fight the Power' by the Isley Brothers was the song that inspired me to write 'Fight the Power' by Public Enemy," he says. "But, being a child of the Sixties, there's so many great protest songs. 'People Get Ready' and a lot of Curtis Mayfield's songs touched my soul. James Brown had a protest song against drugs with 'King Heroin,' and Peter, Paul and Mary struck me as a kindergartener. How could those songs not mean so much?"

As a person who grew up listening to Bob Marley's music in the '70s and as someone who has listened to and respected all of the artists listed above, I simply can't wait for this documentary!

It sounds like it will be something NOT to be missed.

Thought you would like to know.

Here's the website of the man who gave us the song (Get Up, Stand Up):

http://www.bobmarley.com/

And here are the lyrics to that famous song:

GET UP, STAND UP [Bob Marley; Peter Tosh]

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!

Preacherman, don't tell me,
Heaven is under the earth.
I know you don't know
What life is really worth.
It's not all that glitters is gold;
'Alf the story has never been told:
So now you see the light, eh!
Stand up for your rights. Come on!

Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up: don't give up the fight!

Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. Jah!

Get up, stand up! (Jah, Jah!)
Stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Don't give up the fight! (Life is your right!)
Get up, stand up! (So we can't give up the fight!)
Stand up for your rights! (Lord, Lord!)
Get up, stand up! (Keep on struggling on!)
Don't give up the fight!

We sick an' tired of-a your ism-skism game -
Dyin' 'n' goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name, Lord.
We know when we understand:
Almighty God is a living man.
You can fool some people sometimes,
But you can't fool all the people all the time.
So now we see the light (What you gonna do?),
We gonna stand up for our rights!

So you better:
Get up, stand up! (In the morning! Git it up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Stand up for our rights!)
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up! (Get up, stand up!)
Stand up for your rights! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up the fight! (Get up, stand up!)
Get up, stand up!
Stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up!
Don't give up the fight!

Irie-ites, everytime. ;)

If I'm not wrong, that documentary was shown here in Argentina approx. a month ago (end of June), as it has the same name... but that is SO weird, because over here things usually get later or at least, in the case of some movies, at the same time, but NEVER earlier!! :eyebrow:

Anyway, if that's the documentary in question I can tell you that it is simply AWESOME, very complete and shows different periods and points of view of different artists, and in that documentary, Bono talks A LOT (as usual )  . He actually said some very moving things which inspired me a lot... so typically annoying of him

I recorded it, it lasted 3 days, 2 hours each day. :D

"Get Up Stand Up: The History Of Pop And Politics" it was called I think... no idea if it is the same but I guess it must be!!

Is this a new doc, for some reason I believe I saw something very similar on PBS a few years back, is this the same thing I wonder?

edit--ok, just saw that the article said "new", please excuse my stupidity. I still swear I saw something very much like it before, though.

Lemonfix, I live in Cartoon World too!

Great location.

And I remember something similar to this documentary also on PBS a few years ago.

This one is evidently an updated version.

Simply can't wait.:hyper:

I have already seen this. It aired here in Australia about 2 months ago.

It was very good, a few Bono interviews, I think when they were recording HTDAA. Certainly worth a look.
