I was thinking about the double standard of males vs females in music today (shut up, it's been a boring day

)

I, for one, could not think of a single female entertainer singer type person that both guys AND girls liked/respected. I mean most of the female singers are thought of as whores, so...

Can ANYONE think of someone?

Kate Bush, Jewel and there are more I can?t think of right now.

Many male singers are thought of as whores as well; Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, Jody Bernal (don?t ask...) and ofcourse the boyband-crap.

I don?t think there?s a double-standard.

No one thinks of Michelle Branch as a whore. She is very talented, I mean an accomplished singer-songwriter at 18! She doesn't need cheap costumes and stupid dancers behind her, she's got tunes and music and she has my respect!

I agree with Jewel qualifying

I was also thinkin Tori Amos and Fiona Apple....

Sarah McLachlan?

Tori Amos?

Alicia Keys?

I think there is a slight double standard as far as guys are 'permitted' to use their 'sex-appeal', whereas if a woman does that, it is not as accepted.

Of course, either gender using that w/ out any musical talent to back it up is not respectable, imo. Do I even need to give examples?

mmm, I don't think guys have any problem with female singers showing sex-appeal

Yes, I'm sure they don't

,but women are judged more harshly imo in the music industry for doing so.

I am all for women, and men, being free to do so, as long as they actually have musical talent to back it up, and don't have to rely solely on their looks and/or skimpy outfits.

What about Alanis Morissette?

OK-some guys might not like her music or what she says about men

women in the music industry are judged more harshly, but IMO foremost by women

example: even though almost every music critic can+will tell you that Destiny's Child are very good (even though I don't like them that much) you'll still have a hard time finding 3 women over here at Feedback to say something positive about them

and this has more to with the way they dress than with their musical abilities

Her complete lack of talent has caught up with her.

yes there are double standards but i think that has to do with the fact that men make better pop/rock music in general. im not saying men are superior or anything of that rubbish kind. its just a fact that male voices go better with this kind of music. and way more guys start playing in bands when theyre younbg (although that seems to change a bit). its very different in jazz and classical music.

oh and if anyone wants to flame take a look at the top 20 best bands/acts thread first.
