personally, i have always suspected that they are prescription.

I wondered about that too, but one of our Interference members, Mr Lemon, exchanged glasses with Bono and they had non-prescription lenses.

I think they give him something to hide behind and they provide a small degree of privacy from all the scrutinizing. Plus he does have allergies (I remember U2.com interviewed the tour chef and she said he had several food allergies) and some sort of blockage which he's mentioned a few times. They serve a number of uses.
Including, of course, the special xray feature.
