Am I buggin ya? I don't mean to bug ya.... :)

I'm rescuing my little thread for anyone who missed it. Hope that's not obnoxious or arrogant or anything....just want to get as many letters to Sec. O'Neill as possible.Mr. Paul O?Neill
United States Treasury Secretary

Dear Secretary O?Neill:

I am writing to express my congratulations and gratitude for the time you recently took to travel through rural Africa to learn more about what can be done to help. Your focus on providing clean water, for example, impressed me. I was excited to hear you describe that task as ?possible? and then express that it would be ?unforgivable? that 40 million Ethiopians go without it! I could not agree more!

As a citizen of a powerful and prosperous country, I believe it is crucial to do all I can do to help. It?s my hope that our aid to the world?s poorest nations will be increased, that their debt will be dropped and that trade laws will change to ensure a fair market.

Again, congratulations and welcome home! I wish you the best of luck as you continue the fight!

Sincerely,

We were at 95 to go (to reach 100) as of yesterday. :) Thanks to GHG, Oktobergirl, and two other ladies who I hope will forgive me for not remembering their names. (I'm sorry.)

Anyway, write, email, call! Let's let him know we're watching.

Here is my letter that I have typed, printed and faxed to the number above today. I also sent a copy to my state Senator's and called their offices today to tell them I am in support of the Durbin-Specter amendment to provide Emergency Relief Aid for Africa. If you want info on how to do that ( it takes all of about 1 1/2 minutes on the phone, literrally) go to www.stopglobalaids.com.

Here's the letter. I hope it was effective enough, I'm not a great letter writer :|

Dear Mr. Paul O?Neill:

I am writing this letter to you personally, Mr. O?Neill to thank you first of all , for your time and energy that you took on your recent trip to Africa. I hope that you will do all you can do to help those there who are unable to help themselves right now. I followed the trip on CNN as well as through Reuters reports and was very impressed with the places that you visited. I see tremendous potential there and pray for those people every day.
I realize forgiving debt, and providing monetary aid in the form of grants is not the only answer and I wholeheartedly agree with you that business loans are a vital part of reviving the rural economies of sub-Saharan Africa. I of course, am not a finance minister, but an ordinary citizen genuinely concerned for the survival of the African people. At the very least, they should be able to be provided with the minimum necessities.
I truly believe if we, along with the other richest nations, assist Africa with the minimum, access to fresh water, and AIDS medications and fairer trade, that we can make a true difference in millions of people?s lives. You are correct, there are some corrupt governments in Africa and we must deal with these governments very carefully. I have every confidence that the money that you allot from the US taxpayers pocketbooks will be monitored to ensure it goes towards those who need it the most. I believe that in order to ensure public support of this type of effort in the United State by taxpayers, a detailed public relations campaign is in order for the general public to truly understand what we are doing and how the people?s money is NOT going to go back into the hands of corrupt dictatorships. I believe that in the long run this will encourage support for the Africa cause in our country.

Sincerely,

Thanks for writing. I've put you on my list!

89 letters to go now to reach 100! I want to get as many of them as possible to him in the next week or so because if he hasn't met with Bush yet, he's bound to soon.

Oktobergirl, your letter was lovely! :) I'll make that phone call now!

Sherry why don't you have an avatar? You can pick Eurotrash Bono on the last page! Go to member cp then click on edit options and then choose avatar and click one!

Of course you have important things on your mind. I will write one and if you find his email I know everyone will bombard him!
Bless you, you are Bono's angel!

thanks ladies!

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo! :)

Guys, this means only 85 to go! We're Interference, we can do this. :D I think I might make a little webpage for us "Bono's Angels". ;)

Kitty, great to see you back. I'm being really picky about my avatar and can't decide which one I want. :( I think the angel one I posted here (you know, to advertise...LOL) or LennonBono, maybe? I dunno. So that's why I am avatar-less.

Kitty, Velvet, bless ya! O'Neill eagerly awaits hearing from us. LOL.

Remember, if time is an issue, feel free to simply cut and past the letter I posted, sign and send. That's why I posted it. :D

You can copy my letter to. Just change my name ( ha ha). ALso, remember it's JUST as important to get to your senators as it is to O'Neill. They have to vote on the bill. You can mail it or send an email to them or fax it over. just go to congress.com to find your particular senator's name.

I'm attaching an email I received from the jubilee usa coordinator , it has lots of useful ( and very detailed!) information in it, esp about Senators that need special attention ( i.e. the ones that need convincing...)

JUBILEE NEWS AND UPDATES: June 2002

* New Debt Legislation Introduced
----------------------------------------------------

On April 18, 2002, Senators Biden and Santorum and Congressmen Smith
and
LaFalce introduced companion bills in the House of Representatives and
the
Senate called the ?Debt Relief Enhancement Act of 2002?, S. 2210 and
H.R.
4524.

These bills seek to amend the existing Heavily Indebted Poor Country
(HIPC)
debt initiative of the IMF and World Bank. If the more generous terms
of
this legislation were accepted no qualified country would pay more than
5%
of its budget on debt service annually (10% if the country has no
health
crisis.) This would nearly double current debt relief by cutting an
additional $1 billion in debt service payments.

The Senate version of the bill would require that HIPC debt relief not
be
conditioned on certain policy measures often associated with
?structural
adjustment programs? including user fees on health care and education,
the
forced privatization of water, policies that degrade the environment or
weaken labor standards.

These bills have very strong bipartisan support in both the House and
Senate. Some additional sponsors in the Senate include Kerry, Sarbanes,
Lieberman, Nickles, Frist, DeWine and Chafee. In the House, the primary
sponsors are joined by Leach, Bachus, Kelly, Ehlers, English, Morella,
Waters, Frank Kucinich, McNulty, Owens, Schakowsky, Meed, McGovern,
Coyne,
and Tubbs Jones.

* Jubilee USA Network?s Position on H.R. 4524 and S. 2210
---------------------------------------------------------------

Jubilee USA Network supports the bipartisan effort to enact deeper debt
relief in these companion bills, on the grounds that their provisions
would
significantly increase the amount of debt cancelled under the HIPC
program.
We especially applaud the provision in the Senate bill that de-links
future
debt cancellation from harmful conditions such as user fees for health
care,
education, access to clean, safe water, and conditions that degrade
labor
rights and the environment. Jubilee will work towards the inclusion of
these provisions in the House version of the bill.

However, in solidarity with our partners in the Global South, Jubilee
USA
Network continues to critique the fundamentally flawed HIPC program as
the
vehicle for debt relief. By supporting this interim step, Jubilee does
not
indicate support for the program at large. Jubilee USA Network will
continue to call for definitive debt cancellation and the abolition of
harmful conditionalities, often referred to as structural adjustment
programs.

Jubilee USA Network will work towards the fulfillment of the larger
Jubilee
vision as expressed in the Jubilee USA Network Platform:

* What you can say when you call:

?Hello, I am a constituent of Rep. --. I would like to speak with the
aide
that works on the issue of debt cancellation.?

When you get the correct aide (or their voicemail):

--Please support deeper debt cancellation for impoverished countries by
co-sponsoring H.R. 4524, the Debt Relief Enhancement Act. This bill
would
nearly double current debt relief by cutting an additional $1 billion
in
debt service. This would allow poor countries to address important
issues
such as education, HIV/AIDS, and poverty. This bill takes a first step
at
addressing some of the shortcomings of the current debt relief program.

--Please condition further funding of the World Bank on complete debt
cancellation and responsible reforms that will protect access to
health,
education, a clean environment and good jobs.

Detailed talking points are available on request at
sarah_jubileeusa@yahoo.com.

SET UP A CONGRESSIONAL VISIT:

We need Jubilee supporters across the country to set up visits with
their Representative and Senators on debt cancellation and World Bank
reform. Face-to-face visits are the most powerful way to express your
concern to your elected officials!

Please contact Sarah Smiley at 202-546-4470 or
sarah_jubileeusa@yahoo.com if
you are interested in organizing or joining a congressional visit on
Jubilee
issues this summer.

WRITE A LETTER:

Ask your church, community and family to write letters to Congress in
support of legislation for debt cancellation and an end to harmful
World
Bank and IMF policies. Handwritten, personal letters make the most
impact.
It is best to send your letter to your district office since mail to
Washington, DC has been significantly delayed. You may also fax a
hand-written letter to your representative.

Please personalize and edit the following sample letter:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dear Rep. ---:

I am writing to express my support for deeper debt cancellation for
impoverished countries. Debt relief has proven to be effective in
putting
kids in school and saving lives through increased access to health.
However,
debt relief has not gone far enough under the current debt relief
program,
the Heavily Indebted Poor Country Initiative (HIPC). Complete debt
cancellation is needed for the fight against HIV/AIDS and to ensure
global
security through poverty reduction.

Please co-sponsor the ?Debt Relief Enhancement Act,? H.R. 4524, which
will
provide an additional $1 billion in debt relief for impoverished
countries
and is a first step in addressing some of the shortcomings of the
current
debt relief initiative.

Also, the World Bank will ask Congress this year for more of our
taxpayer
money (IDA-13). I would like you to condition your support on deeper
debt
cancellation and an end to harmful World Bank and IMF policies that
prevent
poor people from having access to clean water, health care, adequate
education, and good jobs.

Please respond with your position on these important moral concerns.

Sincerely,

Re: thanks ladies!

Whoo HOO! My friend Malone is gonna send a letter, so we're at 84! And yeah, Oktobergirl is right. We NEED to let our senators know we want them to support this bill!

http://congress.com

or stopglobalaids.com (Here they have a prewritten letter you can just send...took me less than a minute to do.)

So who's gonna make it 83? :D

SD

yep, me too

Yes, I'll write a letter!! I'm sending one to Canada for the Jubilee Debt Campagain so I might as well pop one off to the U.S too.

I will change the letter slightly as I live in the UK but it will have the same message.

Jo

WOW! Thank you D4B and thanks and welcome, Jo! What a great reason for a first post.

:)

This is terrific! Now we're at 82. Bono would LOVE this and be proud, I know.

Behold the power of Interference. :D

Check out the Angel's website. Forgive the dust, I've just "moved in."

http://angelfire.com/poetry/duckworth/angels

(If the link argues with you, just copy and paste.)

SD

PS-- Desire, lol thanks for the advice. If I can get the Angel one made or...I dunno...I'm being picky. LOL There are some beauties, though. :)

Love the web page!!

My letter is ready to send, I'll get it posted in the next few days.

Yay!

:)

Jo

p.s. thanks for the welcome too!

We lost this bill, according to my contact from Jubilee. I'm really upset........what a heart-breaker.  I want to scream. Why did they vote against this? The idiots!

I hope it's not too late, we just can't lose this! I hope more people will do tis even if they don't post. Come on, all the info is here! You'll be doing a good deed! Make Bono proud!

If you're referring to H.R. 4524 and S. 2210, it looks like both bills are still in committee. You can look them up and check on their status at http://thomas.loc.gov/. :)

Oh, OK. It looks like it's in committee. I don't know why that lady thought that they killed it. I feel better--I was devastated! Meanwhile I sent my letter to O'Neil.

Yeah!!!!!!!

Meeangie-- thanks for the info. This means there is STILL TIME. All O'Neill's advocating in the world won't do it if Congress or the President drop the ball. :) Thanks for the status report. May I ask if I can add you to our list of letter senders? (Just asking cause you posted on this thread.)

Remember, guys, if time is an issue (and when is it not?)

stopglobalaids.com

has pre-written letters. All you do is click and send. Look me less than a minute, I timed it.

Also,

congress.com

has info to help you reach you reps. (Keep in mind they are ALL up for re-election. Heh heh. )

Also, I mean it when I say you can copy and paste the letter I wrote. Hey, why reinvent the wheel. Just copy, print and mail! :D

Verte-- thank you, it's under SERIOUS construction...but thank you.

U2K-- amen. I think Bono would have a big ole sloppy wet kiss for anyone who took action. :D
