I dont really care about tidbits they did in concert, just like B-sides and singles. There's some songs I just go, damn I know someone else sang that but I cant think if it.

I'd like to know who the original artists of the songs were as well.

Thank you.

Hendrix is.... not right, dude. It was Dylan, originally, who wrote and recorded AATW.

This is.. uh... we don't play this tune... gonna be f*cked up!

While you said no concert "tidbits", I'm throwing these in because they have been performed in their entirety in concerts for the most part.

Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
Rain - The Beatles
Help - The Beatles (if you didnt know this, i'm scared!)
I'll Remember You - The Ramones

Live they did:

Redemption song - Marley

Won't get fooled again - the Who
Sweet Caroline - Neil Diamond
Hard rain gonna fall - Dylan (not Roxy Music or Eddie Brickell)
Dancing Queen - ABBA

That's all i can remember off the top of my head......

Do you want Bono's non-U2 efforts? Marvin Gaye 'Suffer The Children'? is the only one on the top of my head right now.

Don't Take Your Guns to Town (raggae version of Johnny Cash tune for TV broadcast)

Jesus Christ (Woodie Guthrie)

Pop Muzik (forget who, M's or something like that)

actually I guess the Pop Muzik one is just Bono overdubbing the vocals, I'm not sure if there is a version with U2 performing a studio cover of the song

Baby Please Come Home (not sure who wrote that Xmas song)

And theres....

'People Get Ready' by Curtis Mayfield
'C'mon Everybody' by Eddie Cochran
'Stand By Me' by Ben E King
I remember a cover song which went something like "Do you really wanna be in a rock n roll band?" during the Lovetown tour in Australia....does anyone know about who originally sang that song?

'Dancing in the Moonlight' by Thin Lizzy
'All Kinds of Everything' by Dana (but thats ung only by the Edge)

Hey Skeek I think Righteous Brothers did Everlasting Love but I will check.........

Wow!.....I didn't knoe bono did Halleluja, by Leonard Cohen....I was actually listening to that song this morning and thinking that I'd love to hear Bono sing it! That's pretty trippy.

Dougal the song you're talking about "so you wanna be in a rock n roll band " is a line from Patti Smith "so you wanna be (A rock n Roll Star" Its on Easter. Hope that cleared that one up!
I love that song!

I love that song!

I thought that So You Wanna Be A Rock'n'Roll Star was originally from The Byrds. Don't know for sure though...

Oh, and Everlasting Love is from the Love Affair. I'm sure about that one.

Some more covers:
A Hard's Rain Gonna Fall - Dylan
Tequila Sunrise - Eagles (Sung by Larry!)
Wild Rover - traditional (Sung by Larry!)
Whiskey In The Jar - Thin Lizzy (Sung by Larry!)
I Love You Love - Gary Glitter (Edge karaoke during Popmart)
Radar Love - Golden Earring (Edge karaoke during Popmart)

I had a list of all the covers U2'd done over the years, but unfortunately I deleted it a while ago as it became too hard to update it.

C ya!

Marty

P.S. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) was not a Motown song. It was sung by Darlene Love and produced by Phil Spector (who wasn't a Motown producer).

Pretty comprehensive list so far, but I've got 1 more: The Cross by Prince (before he was the artist formerly known as prince then became prince again).

I won't qualify that as a U2 cover as it was only Bono who sang it at a Prince after-party (and I think it was '96, so in his TAFKAP years)

C ya!

Marty (still thinking of more covers)

I think you guys forgot two....

on may 24th of this year in Toronto (bob dylan's b-day) the boys covered in it's entirety.... "Forever Young" by bob dylan...

also Bono covered "halleluyah" originally performed by Lenord Cohen, and made famous by the late great Jeff Buckley

It might be just me going blind but I think you all skipped Bono's "Children of the Revolution" by ???
And I guess you can assume there will be a Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" coming out soon (except you might never want to listen to it knowing who the backing vocals are).

Just to clarify, the songs I left above are clearly not U2 covers, but U2 originals (or songs that U2 wrote).

Also to add to this thread, Bono did a cover of "Dreaming with Tears in My Eyes" on the Jimmie Rodgers tribute album. This is, IMHO, the best Bono cover tune he has ever done. It is absolutely gorgeous with outstanding Bono vocals (better vocals than on some U2 songs!).
