Briefly: Apple-(Red) deal in the works?

By Ryan Katz, Senior Editor
September 12, 2006 - Apple may be close to inking a deal with U2 front-man Bono that would see the technology company offer some of its products in limited-edition red colors to benefit Bono's AIDS-awareness charity (RED).

Unconfirmed reports from sources familiar with the deal say a red iPod, red MacBook, and red iMac have all been discussed but that no agreement has been finalized and no date is known as to when the products might appear.

(RED) has thus far garnered only limited exposure in the U.S. but has a substantial presence in the U.K., where several (RED)-exclusive products began appearing this year, including a red Motorola SLVR phone and American Express Red card. A portion of the sale of each (RED) product is donated to The Global Fund, an organization that helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Rumors of a (RED) partnership between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and long-time friend Bono have surfaced previously, but sources suggest this is the closest the two parties have come to signing an agreement.

Apple and U2 have a significant history with each other. Jobs tapped Bono to help launch iTunes for Windows in October 2003 and featured U2 and the group's single "Vertigo" in one of the first iPod silhouette television commercials in October 2004. Apple has also offered a U2 Special Edition iPod for the past two years, featuring a black front with red click wheel.
